I'm one in a 7.4 million! 😄 I was there, with my family, at Oktoberfest in München a couple weeks ago. It was fabulous!! The vast majority of attendees were in Tracht (ladies in Dirndls and men in Lederhosen) with fun accessories like felt heart pins and Gluperl - customized wood clothes pins (it's a "Wiesn" tradition for many decades).
It was a Saturday so it was extra packed but the lines for food and rides weren't very long. My favorite ride was the giant ferris wheel with gondolas you sit and ride as a group. My favorite food was Kaiserschmarrn with vanilla sauce - lecker! 😋
The big b**r tents filled up quickly and were closed by early afternoon as they were at capacity but we arrived at 11am so we had the opportunity to sit in the Paulaner Biergarten which was so much fun!
It's been many years since I attended the Oktoberfest, or went to the "Wiesn" as the locals say, and I look forward to going again in a few years. Meanwhile, I'll enjoy the mini versions here in America. 🥨
Oktoberfest broke its crowd record. And the old record needed two extra days to get there.
Munich says 7.4 million guests came through in 16 days. The old record was 7.2 million in 2023, but that year the party ran 18 days because of an extra holiday. Spread it out and this year's crowd was about 460,000 a day. In 2023 it was about 400,000. That is a lot of people for one field in Munich.
They drank about 6.7 million liters of b**r too, up 2.7 percent from last year. A Maß is one liter. Drinks without alcohol sold 10 percent more, and the roast chicken, the Hendl, came back after a few weak years.
On two Saturdays the entrances had to be shut for a while because the grounds were full.
It was not all party, though. A ride worker died on day three, and another one was badly hurt on the last morning.
Most guests still came from Munich or the area around it. The biggest groups from abroad came from the United States, Italy and Austria.
The numbers come from the city of Munich, as reported by Tagesschau, Spiegel and BR24.
Send this to someone who still thinks Oktoberfest is only for tourists.
