⚠️ LENGTHY POST
After yesterday, we feel it’s important to address some confusion surrounding Missouri’s open container laws and our Entertainment District.
There is very specific language in Missouri statute governing how alcohol may be sold, dispensed, packaged, and taken from a licensed establishment. The statute is far too lengthy to post in its entirety here, but the distinction between draft b**r and alcohol sold in its original packaging matters.
Unfortunately, yesterday our staff, as well as staff at fellow downtown businesses, were met with a considerable amount of backlash for simply refusing to do something that would put them and their establishments in violation of Missouri liquor law.
Please understand our bartenders and servers do not make these laws. They are responsible for following them.
When a staff member tells you that a draft b**r cannot leave in a particular manner, or that an unopened product in its original packaging is treated differently, they are not trying to be difficult, ruin anyone’s fun, or make up their own rules. They are doing their job and protecting the liquor license of the business that employs them.
An Entertainment District does not suspend Missouri liquor law. It operates WITHIN Missouri liquor law.
We absolutely want people to enjoy Downtown Hannibal, support our businesses, walk the district and have a great time. But no event, crowd, misunderstanding, or frustration is worth asking an employee or business owner to knowingly violate state liquor law.
We ask for a little patience and respect for the employees and businesses who are working hard to serve everyone while also remaining compliant.
You may not agree with the law, but please don’t take that frustration out on the people required to follow it.
We love seeing Downtown Hannibal busy. We want open container to work, and work well.
