✨ Why Some Areas Don’t Tan Evenly ✨
This client presented with lighter patches on the skin that may indicate a common condition called tinea versicolor (sometimes referred to as “yeast on the skin”).
Tinea versicolor is caused by an overgrowth of yeast that naturally lives on the skin. Heat, sweat, humidity, oily skin, and certain skin types can make it more noticeable.
When spray tanning, these areas may:
• develop lighter than the surrounding skin
• appear patchy after the tan develops
• not hold color evenly
This is NOT harmful and is very common! As a spray tan artist, part of my job is assessing the skin beforehand so I can educate clients and help set realistic expectations for their results. 🤎
Some clients notice improvement with anti-fungal washes such as:
• Selsun Blue
• Head & Shoulders
• Nizoral
(Always consult with a dermatologist for proper diagnosis and treatment recommendations.)
Spray tans don’t cause these spots — they simply make uneven areas of the skin more visible because the surrounding skin darkens while affected areas may not absorb DHA the same way.
