As a cake decorator I make sure to tell my clients if they have wooden sticks and approximately how many are in the cake.
Reason for the sticks is to hold the cake upright for multiple tiers.
Normally my 2 layer cakes do not have them but 3 or more does have them!
I have been testing a different kind they are a sturdy paper kind and not wooden due to this reason.

The post below had another more graphic picture of a lady whos eye got cut due to the wooden sticks from someone pushing her head into the cake. Yes I know its fun for the birthday person and another reason I have been testing with paper ones.
