Derald Halton Heckel, Jr. Obituary
Derald Halton Heckel, Jr., 86, passed away on Thursday, September 9, 2026 at his residence.
A Celebration of Life service is being planned for a later date and will be announced.
Derald was born on December 9, 1939 in Sumter, SC to the late Derald and Orme Strange Heckel. He was a graduate of Edmunds High School and then attended both the Citadel in Charleston and South Carolina State University. He was a veteran of the United States Air Force having served from 1962 until 1965Derald loved computers and worked as a computer engineer most of his life. You could always find him on a computer whether building it, playing games or talking to people on his favorite forums.
Derald was a father of two sons, grandfather of three grandchildren and a great-grandfather of four. He will be missed by many and was loved by many.
In addition to his parents, Derald was preceded in death by his son, Derald Halton Heckel, III.
He is survived by wife, Gloria Schwartz, of the home; son, Robert Clifford (Bobby) Heckel of Durham; grandsons, Scott Stevens and wife, Isabell, Marshall C. Heckel and Jerry W. Heckel; 2 great-grandsons; 2 great-granddaughters; former wife and mother of his children, Alice Heckel; and lots of extended family and many friends.
Memorial contributions may be made to Humane Society of Eastern Carolina, 3520 Tupper Drive, Greenville, NC 27834.

The scholarship combines the federal Pell Grant with the state-funded financial aid program to form a simplified and predictable scholarship award that’s easier to understand and makes education more affordable for most North Carolinians.

People are always asking what we did after the restaurant. We sold the rights to the name to some NY investors for the resort they wanted to build in upstate NY in the Catskills. Now I'm a millionaire and I jet between there and North Carolina. How do you like me now???
