A little reminder from the restaurant side of thingsโฆ โค๏ธ
Restaurants can be unpredictable.
We can be fully staffed for what should be a normal day and suddenly have 40 people walk through the door at once. We can also be short-handed because someone called out, got sick, or life simply happened.
When a restaurant gets busy, please understand that your server may only have a few tables, but the kitchen is cooking for every table in the building plus to-go orders.
Tickets are generally worked in the order they come in, but food doesn't always come out in that exact order. A burger and fries may take less time than a table of six with several different meals. Different foods have different cook times. Large parties take longer. Well-done food takes longer. Modifications can take longer.
And sometimes 10 tables order within five minutes of each other.
That's when a kitchen goes from caught up to buried very quickly.
Your server can't make your food cook faster. Your bartender can't make the kitchen move faster. And the cooks aren't back there ignoring your ticket. Trust me they want that food out of their window just as badly as you want it on your table. ๐
Most of the people working in restaurants are doing the very best they can. They're on their feet for hours, juggling multiple customers, answering questions, running food, making drinks, cleaning tables and trying to make sure everyone is taken care of.
Are mistakes going to happen? Absolutely.
Should you expect good food and good service? Absolutely.
But there's a big difference between bringing a problem to someone's attention and treating someone poorly because you're frustrated.
If your food takes a little longer on a packed Friday night, give the kitchen some grace.
If your server is obviously running her tail off, give her a minute.
If something is wrong, tell us. We want the opportunity to make it right.
Restaurants are run by human beings not machines.
A little patience, kindness and understanding can completely change someone's shift.
And I promise you, we're working harder behind the scenes than you probably realize. โค๏ธ
