Now Hiring: Experienced Lead Cook – ZMG Kitchen (Downtown Greensboro)
Job Overview:
We are seeking one to two dedicated and skilled Line and Prep Cooks to join our team at Zaytoon Mediterranean Grill in Downtown Greensboro, NC. Zaytoon Mediterranean Grill (ZMG) is small family-owned Mediterranean restaurant located in the heart of downtown Greensboro and has been a staple of the downtown lunch scene since 2005. We are a lunch only business and open from 11:00 AM to 3:00 PM Monday-Friday. Speed and consistency in our orders is what we pride ourselves on here at ZMG. The majority of our customers work in the downtown offices and have 30 minutes to an hour for lunch each day, so we strive to output out orders as fast as possible without compromising quality each day. For reference, we are like Chipotle and Panera as far as order output speed goes. We aren’t like fine dining or casual sit down restaurants that can take twenty minutes to deliver your meal.
The ideal candidate will have at least five to ten years of experience working in restaurants and is currently working dinner at another restaurant in Greensboro or the nearby area. We say that because we aren’t necessarily looking for someone needing 40 hours per week, but rather two cooks that are looking for extra hours in the morning and early afternoon. This will also help ensure we have a reference to contact and ensure we are hiring someone trustworthy and reliable. We have one cook who works on the line full time and leads the kitchen now, in addition to two more individuals doing prep work and work on our packaged goods line. Having three cooks able to work on the line in a rotating manner each week will allow us to implement a good formula with everyone working at least 2-3 days/week. This will help give people days off and allow us to not depend on two people showing up each day, as well as help incase one person is out sick or on vacation. However, this formula is still a longer term goal and we are urgently hiring. If you are selected as the first of the two cooks, it would be great to have you available to work M-F until we find a third, but it’s okay if not. This position will be from 9:00/10:00 AM - 3:00 PM Monday - Friday, with the possibility of being sent home early on slower days. Hopefully we can begin to reduce those slow days by having more speed and reliability in our kitchen though.
We are looking to pay closer to $20/hour for this position, which will depend on your experience and references. That compensation can quickly go up as well, if we are pleased with the training and first few months. We are a small business and unfortunately don’t have any medical benefits or 401K plans to offer, but you will get a free lunch and occasional bonus if business improves.
Job Requirements:
Five to ten years of experience working in restaurants as a prep and line cook (please, no applicants without previous kitchen experience or looking to learn, this is not an entry level position).
Must be currently employed by other restaurant so we can contact them as a reference prior to training. English is required and you must demonstrate the ability to read, interpret, and call out tickets when the order is ready, able to take orders on the cash register, phone calls, and interpret DoorDash orders.
You must be familiar with working in a fast paced kitchen and be able to remain calm under pressure. You must be comfortable standing for 3-5 hours at a time, working in a semi-hot environment at times, and lift 50 lbs.
You must have experience working on a flat top grill for 1-2 hours at a time.
We have an open kitchen layout that is customer facing, so you must not be loud when working on the line and refrain from using profanity.
Knowledge of food handling practices and food safety regulations is essential.
Serve-safe accreditation is preferred.
Familiarity with various cooking techniques and equipment is a plus.
Ability to work efficiently in a fast-paced environment while maintaining attention to detail.
Strong teamwork skills and the ability to communicate effectively with other kitchen staff and customers.
Job Duties:
Help clean tables, sweep floors, take out trash, clean bathrooms, mop floors, and help with dishes at the end of the day.
Help portion and package our packaged goods products when not busy.
Help with prep for the day in the morning, including chopping vegetables and portioning ingredients for the line.
Follow recipes and instructions from chefs to ensure consistency in food quality.
Be open to learning and willing to understand how we prepare things here, even if you’ve done it somewhere else.
Maintain cleanliness and organization of the kitchen workspace, including proper storage of food items.
Adhere to all food safety and sanitation guidelines to ensure a safe working environment.
Help with inventory management by monitoring stock levels and reporting shortages.
Collaborate with other kitchen staff to ensure timely meal service.
Support the cooking staff by performing additional tasks as needed.
