Let me tell y’all about one of the craziest business days of my life.
It was GHOE—The Greatest Homecoming on Earth! 🌎
Now if you know GHOE, you know that’s not the weekend you want anything to go wrong. I had spent just about every dollar I had. My trailer was packed with fish, shrimp, chicken, hot dogs… I’m already counting money in my head. 😂
Then here come the health department…
They walked up and said, “If you take one pan of food out of this trailer, you’ll be arrested on the spot.”
🤦🏽♂️
Now I ain’t gonna lie… I looked at that food… looked at them… then looked back at that food again. 😂
In my head I’m saying, “Lord, I know You didn’t bring me all the way to GHOE just to let these fish go swimming back home!” 🐟🤣
The only thing I could legally operate was my hot dog cart.
So what did I do?
I didn’t throw a pity party.
I went and bought some walkie-talkies, set up another area behind the building, and used my legal hot dog cart as the front line. Folks came to the cart, got the menu, we radioed the orders to the back, and kept everything moving.
“Two whiting plates!” 📻😂
“One shrimp basket!”
“Tell ‘em don’t forget the hot sauce!”
Boy, we looked like the FBI running a fish operation. 🤣🤣
By the end of the weekend…
WE SOLD OUT!
Now before some of y’all get excited and say, “I’m about to try that…” 😒😂
Don’t.
That experience taught me a lesson I’ll never forget.
I realized I needed to stop surviving and start building. I learned the regulations, got everything in order, and made sure I never wanted to be in that position again.
See, people celebrate Maho’s today, but they don’t know Maho’s yesterday.
They don’t know about the mistakes…
The pressure…
The sleepless nights…
Or the times I had to figure it out with what I had.
Maho’s been through it!
But every fall taught me something.
Every mistake made me wiser.
Every setback made me stronger.
Moral of the story:
Sometimes God will let your plan fall apart so your character can come together.
You might lose some money.
You might lose an opportunity.
You might even lose your pride.
But don’t lose the lesson.
Because the blessing wasn’t that I never fell…
The blessing is that God never left me there. 🙌🏾💯
P.S. Y’all quit laughing… if you’ve been in business long enough, you’ve got at least one story that starts with, **“Now don’t judge me…”
