Could This Be One of the Earliest Glimpses of Our Hotel's History?

Long before the General Morgan Inn stood on Main Street, the Lane House welcomed travelers to this very same location.

Taken from the Dickson-Williams Mansion sometime during the 1800s, this remarkable photograph captures a Greeneville that looks quite different from the town we know today. First Presbyterian Church stands in the distance, and the building just in front of it may be the Lane House itself!

If so, we're looking at a rare glimpse of our property's past, before the Grand Central Hotel, Hotel Brumley, and eventually the General Morgan Inn became part of its story.

Though Greeneville's landscape has changed through the generations, the ground beneath the General Morgan Inn holds more than two centuries of history, with countless stories woven into its past.

🎉 30 Years of Patricia! 🎉

In 1996, just one month after the General Morgan Inn reopened its doors, Patricia Bohon came to Greeneville to help train the new Brumley’s crew. The plan was to lend her experience and get the team started.

Thirty years later, she’s still here. 💚

Over the decades, Patricia has worn more than a few hats, serving as Restaurant Manager, Food & Beverage Manager, and now leading our Sales Department. Through every role, she has brought the same dedication, knowledge, sense of humor, and genuine care for the people around her.

Thirty years means thousands of events, countless celebrations, plenty of stories, and an immeasurable contribution to the General Morgan Inn we know today.

We’re incredibly grateful Patricia decided to stick around all those years ago, and even more grateful that she continues to be such an important part of our team.

Pull out the feathers, masks, sequins, and costumes. On Friday, October 30, the Rooftop Terrace is throwing a Halloween party with a New Orleans soul and plenty of Tennessee spirit.

The kitchen is serving up gumbo, gator tail, boudin balls, and beignets. Sugarlands is bringing the moonshine. The DJ is bringing the soundtrack. And somewhere between the first cocktail and last call, we’ll find out who came dressed to win.

Prizes are on the line for Best Dressed, Best Couple, Most Creative, and Funniest, so this is not the night for the costume you found five minutes before leaving the house.

Your $45 admission includes the evening’s food and a complimentary light-up tankard to carry into the night. Sugarlands cocktails and b**r will be available at the cash bar, with a Sugarlands tasting offered for an additional fee.

More than 140 years ago, the Lane House stood on the very same Main Street site where the General Morgan Inn stands today.

Advertisements from the early 1880s give us a fascinating glimpse into the hospitality business happening right here. Under proprietor L. F. Self, the Lane House promised “first class accommodations,” clean beds, prompt service, reasonable charges, and a table said to rival the best hotels in East Tennessee.

Traveling salesmen, then known as commercial travelers, received special rates and free use of a sample room, where they could display their merchandise and meet with local merchants.

The local newspaper offered perhaps the best endorsement: “Put up at the Lane, when in Greeneville, and our word for it you will go away satisfied.”

More than a century later, the name and building have changed, but hospitality continues on the very same piece of Main Street. 🗝️🏨

🎨 No matter how far life takes you, there are some places that always feel like home.

This October, the Mason House Gallery welcomes artist and bluegrass musician Mike Durham for an exhibition shaped by family, childhood memories, and the landscapes of Greene County.

Mike’s father’s military career took his family around the world, but summers brought him back to the family farm in Greene County. Through pen and ink, oil, watercolor, and pencil, those memories return in familiar mountain views, country scenes, and the distinctive light and shadow of East Tennessee.

“Getting all this together is like a homecoming for my memories. I know you can feel it, too.”

Mike’s work will be on display throughout October at the General Morgan Inn’s Mason House Gallery.
