Did you know today is International Martime day? The Martime industry dates back to the beginning of civilization when people started traveling by water to trade and sell goods.

Barge transport is also eco-friendly as when compared on a weight basis to truck and rail. Per one ton of material a barge can travel approximately 675 miles on one gallon of diesel fuel. By rail for the same weight of material and same amount of fuel, the distance shortens to approximately 472 miles. The same fuel amount and same material weight amount when transported by truck shortens the distance even more to 151 miles ( https://www.nationalwaterwaysfoundation.org/file/47/NWF%202022NewStudyInserts_FINAL.pdf)

We are fortunate to live so close to one of the major waterways in the United States. We are even more fortunate to live close enough to the Melvin Price Lock and Dam to be able to go check out the visitors center and learn more about our waterways. Many families in our community rely on Martime jobs to survive.
