Bladdernut (Staphylea trifoliata) is a large shrub to small tree that is one of the strangest native plants we have to our region. It is part of the Staphyleacea family, of which it is the only member of said family that occurs in the US. Most of the diversity of this family is found in China and Eurasia.

In spring, it produces beautiful pendulous flower clustered that smell incredible. Around this time of year, it produces these “bladder-like” pods from said flowers that hold the seeds. The seeds are edible, but not very tasty. In my opinion, the seeds are best reserved for wildlife.

We are loaded for tomorrow’s Alton Farmers' and Artisans' Market!!!

We are back to the farmers market after a 3 weeks! We are very glad to be back at it. This time of year is a magical transition period from summer to fall. Right now, our fall blooming aster family plants are going absolutely crazy! They’ll be putting in a beautiful display all the way till frost. This show isn’t just for us, the pollinators appreciate it more than we could ever hope to.

The weather is saying it’s perfect for fall planting!! Fill up those empty garden beds with native perennials while they last. We only have 4 more weeks of market!

See you there!

We are loaded for tomorrow! We will be at The Mississippi Earthtones Festival from 12pm-6pm with a large selection of native perennials, trees, and shrubs!

Here’s some photos of some of what we will be bringing. We only have 1 month left of our season, so better secure some plants before they’re gone! We will be in spot 54.

See you guys there!

EDIT: we unfortunately will no longer be attending The Fruit Stands Seafood Boil for a popup. We decided it’d be better saved for Springtime, we apologize for the inconvenience!

I would like to thank everyone who showed up for last week’s plant sale at The Nature Institute! You guys absolutely rock!

We have two sales coming up this Saturday AND Sunday.

Saturday we will be at the Mississippi Earthtones Festival at the Alton Amphitheater from 12pm-6pm selling native plants and giving out free seed packets of native pioneer species to kids!

And one more thing! Here’s the inventory list for the latter half of September. Our season is winding down for the year, so get some plants while they last!

Thank you all for the continued support. I apologize for any late responses, school’s been busy!

The American hazelnut (Corylus americana) is a large shrub found throughout the Midwest. This shrub was historically much more common than it is now. This is largely due to fire suppression and invasive species like bush honeysuckle and autumn olive.

American hazelnut thrives in savanna ecosystems that are regularly burned. Remove the advent of fire and you remove this species from the ecosystem. This species is a keystone to our Midwest ecosystems as it provides food for nearly every part of the food web. It is a host plant to many Lepidoptera species, it is a reliable food source for game birds and mammals, and it helps provide cover for song birds and smaller critters.

As this species continues to decline, it is people like my grandpa who are going to save it. My grandpa Klein has been managing this large population of hazelnut on his property for well over 50 years. Today, we show the picking process and the ecology of this amazing native shrub species.
