Jim and Kitz didn’t just take over a restaurant; they helped build a tradition that would become part of Glenview’s history. And that’s what makes the story so special. What started as a small family business became a place where memories were made, friendships grew, and generations returned to the same familiar tables.

Long before there was a Hackney’s restaurant, there was a house on Harms Road.

During Prohibition, Jack and Bebe Hackney were serving burgers and b**r from the back porch of their Glenview home — right where the Hackney’s story would eventually take root.

And when we look at this photo, we don’t just see a piece of Hackney’s history. We see family. We see the people who were there at the very beginning, before there were restaurants, menus, or signs out front.

What started on a back porch became a Glenview tradition that would span generations.

Pretty amazing to think it all started right here.

Get ready to raise a stein and enjoy a little taste of Germany at Hackney’s! Tomorrow at 5:30 PM, Alpine Thunder will be joining us on the patio for an evening of German folk music.
We’re bringing the flavors to the table with our Bratwurst Plate, served with German potato salad and red cabbage. Pair it with Hofbrau Oktoberfest, or grab a Stiegl or Paulaner all on tap to round out the night.

In August 1943, the Army was conducting a chemical-warfare demonstration at Camp Skokie Valley. The wind shifted—and carried the tear gas across Harms Road toward Hackney’s, where unsuspecting customers were sitting at the bar and tables.

The camp newspaper joked that patrons were suddenly “weeping into their b**r.” 😂

A few years ago, Guy Fieri and the Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives crew stopped by Hackney’s and gave us a little time in the spotlight.

Well… they came back!
