Disc golf tip for anyone stepping up to a new hole and second-guessing their disc selection.
When you're standing on the tee pad and the wind is blowing into your face, resist the urge to reach for your fastest, most overstable driver. That instinct makes sense on paper, but into a headwind, a high-speed disc with a lot of fade will often dive out early and lose you serious distance.
Instead, grab something a little slower and more understable than you normally would. A headwind actually amplifies the stability of any disc in flight, so a disc that flies fairly neutral in calm air will behave much more like a stable, dependable flier when the wind pushes against it. You get a cleaner flight path, better control, and more distance than if you muscled a big driver into the teeth of the wind.
Same logic works in reverse for a tailwind. A tailwind reduces effective stability, so your go-to stable disc might flip over and veer off unexpectedly. In a tailwind, bump up to something a little more overstable to keep the flight where you want it.
Once you start reading the wind before you pick your disc, rather than after, you will be surprised how much more consistent your drives become. It is one of those small adjustments that quietly changes your whole game. 🎯
