Most football fans travel to support their team.
The Scottish fans who arrived for the 2026 World Cup ended up supporting an entire community. ❤️⚽🏴
Known around the world as the Tartan Army, Scotland's supporters have built a reputation not only for their passion, but also for their friendliness and generosity.
When thousands of them traveled to the United States for the World Cup, many planned to stay near Gillette Stadium in Foxborough, Massachusetts.
There was just one problem.
The hotel prices were sky-high. 💸😳
Instead, many fans found accommodation in nearby Providence, Rhode Island, where they were welcomed by local residents, police officers, firefighters, city officials, and members of the local Providence Tartan Army.
What began as a practical solution quickly turned into something much more meaningful.
The Scottish supporters were touched by the hospitality they received. Everywhere they went, they found friendly faces, helping hands, and people eager to make them feel at home. 🤝❤️
Then Scotland defeated Haiti 1–0 on June 13.
The victory gave the fans something to celebrate.
But they decided they also wanted to give something back.
🌟 Instead of simply enjoying the tournament, the supporters organized a fundraising effort that raised nearly $30,000 for local causes.
Their donations included:
🏥 $10,000 for the cancer unit at Hasbro Children's Hospital, helping children undergoing treatment.
⚽ $10,000 for a youth soccer program supporting underprivileged children in Rhode Island.
🚶♂️ $6,500 for Craig Ferguson, who had walked from Los Angeles to Boston to raise money for Scottish mental health services.
The donation checks were presented during the Tartan Army Downtown March and music festival in Providence, turning a football celebration into something much bigger than sport. 🎶⚽
For many local residents, the gesture came as a surprise.
For those familiar with the Tartan Army, it felt perfectly in character.
Because the story wasn't really about football.
It was about gratitude.
A city welcomed thousands of strangers.
