July 28th is day! In Japan, summer is very hot and humid. Because of this climate, people tents to feel sick and out of themselves around this time of year. To battle that dullness, it is a tradition to eat eel on the day called doyo-ushi-no-hi (changes every year) to keep stamina up. At Fukuno, our eel is fresh from the market and filleted in the kitchen. We’re open Wednesday through Sunday, 12:00-1pm for lunch takeout, 5pm-9pm for dinner! #土用の丑の日

, pickled plum (ume), is one of the pickled dish you will frequently encounter in Japanese cuisine. It is said that ume was brought to Japan at least by around 800 AD from China. Although ume was mainly used as medicine in China, Japanese people cherished adored the beauty of its flower. Later, people stated enjoy the fruit as well. During the warring states period, umeboshi was used as both superfood and medicine to keep samurais vigorous. In fact the study show that the citric acid in umeboshi helps reduce lactic acid, which reduces fatigue. There are many brand and kids of umeboshi in Japan, and Fukuno’s kappo bento comes with umeboshi on its rice. Take a bite of umeboshi in between other bites and enjoy the sour-sweet treat.

Every region has its original miso and every household has its own recipe for miso soup. With miso being made of fermented soy beans, it keeps your digestive system healthy and is a great source of plant based protein.
