I posted this video on tiktok of our Dubai Chocolate Chip Cookie. I was left this comment.
"Looks good but $4 for a cookie is greed."
I see where you’re coming from, and honestly, before starting my own baking business, I probably would have thought the same thing. But let’s break it down.
This is a large 4.5 oz cookie by the time it's ready to be packaged. The goung rate is about a $1 an ounce, it would already be around $4.50 based on size alone.
I roast my own pistachios and make my own Dubai filling. This recipe is also my own creation, developed through years of trial and error. You can find recipes online, but you won’t find one that tastes exactly like mine because the recipe, process, and ratios are mine.
This batch takes about an hour from start to finish when you include gas to the store, shopping, making the filling, chilling, baking, cooling, dishes, and cleanup. And yes, I charge for my time.
If you made it yourself, you’d have to buy all the ingredients, likely have leftovers you may never use again, and do all the prep, dishes, cleanup, and baking yourself.
Could you make one cheaper at home? Absolutely. But you’re also doing all the work.
At the end of the day, it’s your money. If $4 isn’t worth it to you, that’s totally okay. But calling a 4.5 oz, small-batch, homemade, labor-intensive cookie “greed” doesn’t really reflect everything that goes into it.
I’m not trying to get rich off a cookie. I’m pricing my ingredients, my time, my recipe development, and my work fairly while keeping it as affordable as I can.
What do y'all think? Is my pricing to high?
Do you agree with someone called Crinkle Fries??
