As owners of a small family-owned coffeeshop, we seek out other non-chain coffeeshops when we get the chance to leave town. When we find great ones, we like to spread the word.
Aldea Coffee in Muskegon, Michigan, checked all the boxes and then some for us. (As in, it made us want to move to Muskegon just so we could go there for coffee.) It was the whole ball of wax. As is usually the case, we couldn't help but analyze what made it great.
1. An outdoor space. This one was attractive, easy to access, clean, and comfortable.
2. An inviting interior. This one was absolute perfection, from the decor and space utilization, to the natural light, to the customer art display, to outlets for charging your phone, to the little nook with cushions, books, and games.
3. Baristas who are welcoming, knowledgeable, efficient, and experts at their craft. Here, it was a joy to watch them — they never broke a sweat, they moved with intention, and their calmness (even when the rush began) made its way to the guests. We felt calm and comfortable because they were.
4. A product that is not flashy, not trendy — it's pure excellence. Their cold brew, drip, and chai were on point. They use only the best ingredients — ones that are rooted in sustainable and ethical farming practices and a "people and planet before profit" approach.
We give Aldea six thumbs up!
