Family Meal – Double Stack Burger
The waiter described this burger to me as “a bougie Big Mac” which was music to my ears. I think all great burgers stem from a feeling of nostalgia. There are few experiences I craved more as a child than pulling into McDonalds with the family; images of perfectly doctored burgers spinning around in my mind. McDonald’s was special to me as a child. My mom’s ban on it only increased my cravings. It was exclusive, it was culturally pervasive, and it was the height of dining to little 7-year-old me.
That illusion became shattered with each lukewarm patty slid my way through a McD’s drive thru. Yet that excited memory still exists, and occasionally a burger comes around wakes that nostalgic feeling. Family Meal does just that.
Burgers should be simple. Any burger that takes a tried and true classic and just elevates it gets props in my books. That is exactly what Family Meal does. Everything about this burger is familiar, approachable, and delicious. It definitely does remind me of the classic Big Mac. Family Meal chargrills two thin patties which come out juicy and fall apart in your mouth. It tastes like a cookout with the family.
It’s topped with lettuce and tomato which I could always do without and add nothing to the burger albeit a greater sense of nostalgia, reminding me of old Checkers ads. There is nothing being revolutionized with this burger; It is a damn good classic. It is cheesy and juicy, has a nice creaminess from the special sauce and acid from the pickles, and it hits every note that I would want of a cheeseburger.
What Family Meal represents, to elevate comfort food to a standard it deserves, is not new. There are thousands of big city restaurants thinking they can reinvent our childhood classics and slap on a hefty price tag, and they’re deluded enough to think they contributed something to our culinary culture. Family Meal is different. It sits alone the middle of a Frederick parking lot, framed only by a brewery and cigar shop. It exudes a sense of familiarity and humility with both its ethos and its food. It is by no means trying to reinvent the classics; it is just sharing its love for them.
