FRIDAY MORNING FLOODING UPDATE — AUGUST 14

There is some encouraging news this morning. Floodwaters have dropped what looks to be 5 feet in some areas, even after last night’s rain. We are continuing to monitor conditions throughout the community.

The intersection of Tiger Drive, Smith Street and Adaline Street is now open.

Town and County crews worked throughout the night and will be throughout the day clearing trees and debris from roads following last night’s winds. Crews remain out this morning assessing conditions and continuing cleanup.

Several areas lost power over the night, including South Broadway, Walnut, Scott Drive and Lexington Point. Please use caution if traveling while utility and road crews are working.

Our drinking water system has NOT been compromised, quality is being monitored, and tap water from the Town's wells remains safe to drink.

Please remember that floodwater itself is not safe. Delaware County Emergency Management has reported noxious, chemical and foul fumes around some floodwaters. Floodwater can contain sewage, gasoline, chemicals, pesticides and other contaminants. Do not walk, play or drive through it. If you notice a strong chemical, fuel or rotten-egg odor, move away from the area and to higher ground with clear air.

As Yorktown conditions improve, our neighbors are still dealing with significant flooding and damage. Yorktown Fire Department crews are currently assisting with flood response efforts in Madison County.

Continue checking on your neighbors and if you are able, assist.
