A fall stay in Captain’s Quarters with Bri Anora

10/02/2026

This November, one of the world’s leading practitioners of Gyotaku, the centuries-old Japanese art of nature printing, comes to Newport Ranch.

DAY 1: Introduce you to the history, tools, and basic processes of 19th century Japanese Gyotaku, which is a form of nature printing and documenting when photography wasn’t available to most.

DAY 2: Together, we will explore the natural surroundings of the Ranch snd gather material and find inspiration.

DAY 3/4: European naturalists used an almost identical process to document plant life. You’ll be amazed at how much detail can be transferred to your paper.

DAY 5: Dwight will guide you as you create your own living impressions piece, which will incorporate all that you learned throughout the week. Utilizing both Japanese Gyotaku and European nature printing to produce a lasting visual memory of your time here.

New season coming 🌲🍄‍🟫

A Gyotaku print by artist Dwight Hwang hangs beside the larder, a quiet reminder that everything here starts with what the land and sea provide. Chef Nick’s plates and Dwight’s prints are, in their own way, telling the same story: pay close enough attention to a place, and it can leave an important impression.

Gyotaku is a traditional Japanese printmaking practice, born from fishermen documenting their catch: ink applied directly to a fish, then pressed to paper, capturing every scale and fin in exact detail. Dwight looks to the sea and the natural world as his subject, the same surroundings that shape everything we do here.

This November, Dwight joins us at the Ranch as our Artist in Residence, sharing this practice in a hands-on printmaking experience — a rare chance to learn Gyotaku from someone who’s spent a lifetime perfecting it.

There’s an art form where the ocean becomes the canvas.

It’s called Gyotaku — the centuries-old Japanese practice of nature printing — and this November, we’re honored to have one of the world’s leading practitioners, Dwight Hwang, teaching it in person.
His “living impressions” have been exhibited at the Smithsonian and the Natural History Museum of Los Angeles County. This fall, they come to Newport Ranch.

Behind our kitchen is a larder built entirely from the Ranch itself.

Executive Chef Nick Wells and Adam Lawrence along with our team preserve what the land and sea provide across the seasons: meadow, redwood forest, coastline, and everything in between, harvesting each ingredient at its peak and building flavors meant to stay with you long after the meal.

It’s a practice rooted in close attention: knowing a place well enough to know exactly when it’s ready to give something back.

Let’s do it all again like last year.

Only a few tickets left for this year’s Outstanding in the Field dinner next week on July 1st. Executive Nick Wells and forager Adam Lawrence are back in the kitchen, the views are just as spectacular as you remember, and the table is almost full.

Don’t wait on this one. Link in bio for tickets.

Stinging nettle cavatelli—made with nettles gathered right here on the ranch. The leaves are blanched and pureed into a deep green paste, then folded into flour and egg yolk to form a soft, earthy dough. Hand-rolled into small, curved cavatelli, each piece carries notes of spring.
