2 Chix & Friends are back! Kim Butler and Heather Schalk bring their outstanding musical ensemble back to The Joint Next Door! It all started during Hurricane Helene. These two ladies set up right outside The Local Joint and played for free as folks came by to pick up a free meal and to browse the supply hub in the parking lot. It was an extremely generous act of service and provided people with a sense of normalcy during those trying times. Now, every show they bring on new guest appearances by local musicians, adding variety to an already versatile band. Come join us for an incredible show!

Rod Sphere is a highly esteemed singer/songwriter, poet & troubadour, currently residing on the East Coast of America. Rod was a foundational figure in the Los Angeles/Hollywood/Southern California “underground acoustic” scene for many years, later relocating to Northern California, before finally arriving on the East Coast in 2020. He performs original material and puts his unique spin on classics from the 50’s, 60’s, 70’s and 80’s. His singular style is both energizing and soothing, captivating and liberating.

“The most fun you can have on a Monday night with your clothes on” is how Mr. Jimmy describes Blue Monday at the Joint Next Door. What started over 5 years ago as a solo show with award-winning, Chicago-bred, Asheville-based guitarist/singer/songwriter Mr. Jimmy has evolved into a Monday Night Blues Party. Guitar slinger and South Side of Chicago native, Hollywood Johnny Cosgrove, joined his old friend Jimmy to form a duo. Soon, they were joined by Patrick Lockett on the Mississippi saxophone (harmonica) and a rock-solid rhythm section of Charlie Wilkinson on bass and David Halstead on drums. Together, Mr. Jimmy and Friends have become the best-kept secret in Fairview, providing low-down Blues, fun vibes, and good times every Monday at the Joint Next Door!

Sal Landers is a seasoned, multi-award winning singer/songwriter and guitarist based in Asheville, NC. Over the breadth of her career, she’s played thousands of shows, had commercial success via a publishing deal with Sony/TriStar, shared the stage with many notable musicians, including: Joan Jett, Eddie Money, Will Smith, Roy Clark, Alabama, The Tubes, Linda Perry, Chris Williamson, and Holly Near, just to name a few. Sal has released three full-length CD’s, and no stranger to working hard, she toured heavily throughout the 1980’s and 90’s in both Europe and the USA with her Los Angeles-based bands, The Fixations and Sideswipe. Possessing showmanship in spades, she has continued to make her mark as a fiery, impassioned performer who deftly takes command of the stage, dishing up epic grooves, crunchy guitar riffs, and robust vocals. Sal has an easy, natural rapport with the audience and offers crowd-rousing performances that lean into raw, potent, organic sound featuring classic rock/funk/indie covers as well as her own smartly crafted melodic originals that are rife with honest, vulnerable lyrics that draw largely from Sal’s personal experience. Kindred Spirit is a newly formed, engaging all-female Blues band that channels the deep emotional roots of the genre.

Blending rhythmic Delta grooves with soaring, soulful modern vocals, they honor the foundational styles of the blues.

These 5 talented female musicians from various other bands and projects came together rather serendipitously.

The Story Behind the Name

The name Kindred Spirit is more than just a catchy title; it is a nod to the way this particular group of players joined forces.

Formed on friendship and a shared love for the craft, they play for the pure joy of making music together, dedicated to the art of the song.

One of their super powers is that 4 of the 5 of them sing lead. So when one is out front vocally, the others are supporting, singing back up.

Blues Chaunteuse, Peggy Ratusz sings lead and backing vocals, plays hand percussion and brings her 16 time win for Best in Blues to every stage!

Graceful and gritty singer and Songwriter, keyboard player, Carrie Morrison is a chameleon and selfless collaborator, adding just the right touches to each song on the Spirit playlist.

Wait! What? Is that Kim Butler on guitar? Why, yes it is! It’s not often the public gets the opportunity to hear the bassist to the stars play guitar! But on June 24th, you’ll see what all that’s about! She’ll wail on vocals too, no doubt!

So, who will be playing bass, you ask? Why none other than Rutherford County’s own Janet Del Real. Janet’s the reason KS even exists! Her passion and zeal for the Blues is infectious! And all that love comes out as she slides effortlessly up and down the neck of that beautiful upright bass she plays!

I’ll tell you a little secret about Heather Schalk. She started playing drums less than 2 years ago! She’s a natural, what else can be said? Well, only that her sharp ear for the beat and her need for that pocket, keeps all the Kindreds in rhythmic tow!

These Blues babes celebrate the music that American roots were grown from. And like one of their original tunes attests, "there’s nothin’ the Blues can’t heal!"

Kindred Spirit carves out another space in this traditionally male-dominated genre with s***k and style!
