Soul Blue is a charismatic and entertaining classic Soul/Blues/R&B band whose five members hail from both Asheville, NC, and Atlanta, GA. These seasoned musicians come together from a variety of popular local bands such as The Hunter Brothers Band, River Rock, Daddy’s Money, The XL’s, and Banks and Shane, enabling them to create an authentic approach to the music of many best-loved Soul, Blues, and R&B artists such as Howlin’ Wolf, Freddie King, Johnny “Guitar” Watson, James Cotton, Little Milton, Muddy Waters, Bo Diddley, Ted Taylor, James Brown, Wilson Pickett, Marvin Gaye, Otis Redding, Al Green, Smokey Robinson, Aretha Franklin, Janis Joplin, Prince, Ann Peebles, Martha Reeves and The Vandellas, The Spinners, Taj Mahal, Delbert McClinton, Keb’ Mo’, Jimmy Hall, John Mayer, The Allman Brothers. The Rolling Stones, Tedeschi Trucks Band, Samantha Fish, and many more. Roots and Dore are an acoustic blues, roots, and soul duo from the music-rich mountains of Asheville, North Carolina. With their unique style and captivating original songs and covers from some of the best in blues and soul history. They’ve become one of the busiest acts in the U.S., touring Europe, performing annually at New Orleans’ JazzFest, and playing 150–200 club and festival shows for more than 15 years. They have shared the stage with some of the biggest names in the blues business, including Bobby Rush, Eric Gales, Cedric Burnside, John Dee Holeman, Bob Margolin, Maria Muldaur, Mac Arnold, Guitar Shorty, and many more. They’ve even opened up for Billy Bob Thornton’s band, The Boxmasters, twice. It’s always a great time when Roots and Dore are playing.

Kindred Spirit is a newly formed, engaging all-female Blues band that channels the deep emotional roots of the genre.

Blending rhythmic Delta grooves with soaring, soulful modern vocals, they honor the foundational styles of the blues.

These 5 talented female musicians from various other bands and projects came together rather serendipitously.

The Story Behind the Name

The name Kindred Spirit is more than just a catchy title; it is a nod to the way this particular group of players joined forces.

Formed on friendship and a shared love for the craft, they play for the pure joy of making music together, dedicated to the art of the song.

One of their super powers is that 4 of the 5 of them sing lead. So when one is out front vocally, the others are supporting, singing back up.

Blues Chaunteuse, Peggy Ratusz sings lead and backing vocals, plays hand percussion and brings her 16 time win for Best in Blues to every stage!

Graceful and gritty singer and Songwriter, keyboard player, Carrie Morrison is a chameleon and selfless collaborator, adding just the right touches to each song on the Spirit playlist.

Wait! What? Is that Kim Butler on guitar? Why, yes it is! It’s not often the public gets the opportunity to hear the bassist to the stars play guitar! But on June 24th, you’ll see what all that’s about! She’ll wail on vocals too, no doubt!

So, who will be playing bass, you ask? Why none other than Rutherford County’s own Janet Del Real. Janet’s the reason KS even exists! Her passion and zeal for the Blues is infectious! And all that love comes out as she slides effortlessly up and down the neck of that beautiful upright bass she plays!

I’ll tell you a little secret about Heather Schalk. She started playing drums less than 2 years ago! She’s a natural, what else can be said? Well, only that her sharp ear for the beat and her need for that pocket, keeps all the Kindreds in rhythmic tow!

These Blues babes celebrate the music that American roots were grown from. And like one of their original tunes attests, "there’s nothin’ the Blues can’t heal!"

Kindred Spirit carves out another space in this traditionally male-dominated genre with s***k and style!

Kate Leigh Bryant is an educator, violinist/fiddler, and singer-songwriter. She runs a small music lesson studio from her house in West Asheville, surrounded by her chaotic gardens and urban paw forest. As a songwriter, she has been featured with The Western Carolina Writers and Open Folk Asheville. Her original music ranges from sentimental folk to rowdy dive bar country. “Roots”, her debut EP, is now available on all your favorite streaming platforms.
