一只坐头鲸浮出水面，
A humpback whale rises out of the water.
它的嘴巴上布满了白白的藤壶。
White barnacles cover its mouth.
一只海龟慢慢游过小船，
A sea turtle slowly swims past a boat.
它的壳上也长满了藤壶。
Its shell is covered with barnacles too.
一艘大船停在港口，
A big ship stops at the harbor.
船底被密密麻麻的藤壶包围，
Its bottom is covered with crowded barnacles.
工人们正在努力清除它们。
Workers are working hard to remove them.
藤壶长在鲸鱼嘴边和眼睛附近，
Barnacles grow near the whale’s mouth and eyes.
让鲸鱼觉得又痒又难受。
It makes the whale feel itchy and uncomfortable.
它会在岩石上、海底蹭来蹭去，
The whale rubs itself on rocks and the seabed.
皮肤甚至会蹭出伤口。
Sometimes its skin gets scraped.
海龟身上的藤壶越来越厚，
Barnacles grow thick on the turtle’s shell.
它们游得越来越慢，
The turtle swims slower and slower.
有些海龟甚至浮不上水面来呼吸。
Some turtles can’t even float up to breathe.
藤壶还会附着在船底，
Barnacles also attach to ship bottoms.
让船变重、变慢，
They make ships heavier and slower.
还更容易被海水腐蚀。
And easier to corrode in seawater.
人类需要花很多时间和金钱去清除它们。
People spend time and money to get rid of them.
所以，有人说：
So some people say:
“藤壶是寄生恶魔！”
“Barnacles are parasite devils!”
可藤壶真的这么可怕吗？
But are barnacles really that bad?
藤壶有很多种，
There are many kinds of barnacles.
有的叫龟藤壶、
Some are called turtle barnacles,
有的叫鹅颈藤壶、
Some are goose barnacles,
还有网纹藤壶、鲸藤壶……
There are net-patterned barnacles, whale barnacles…
全世界藤壶的种类超过1000种！
There are over 1,000 types of barnacles in the world!
藤壶小时候是软软的小幼虫，
Baby barnacles are soft little larvae.
没有壳，漂在海水里，
They have no shell and float in seawater.
它们要找一个地方“安家”。
They look for a place to settle down.
有的藤壶选择岩石，
Some choose rocks.
有的选择船底，
Some choose the bottom of ships.
还有的，选择了鲸鱼、海龟的背上！
Others choose the backs of whales or turtles!
一旦安定下来，
Once settled,
藤壶就开始伸出小触手，
Barnacles stretch out tiny legs,
在水中捕捉漂浮的食物。
To catch floating food in the water.
但藤壶也有天敌！
But barnacles have enemies too!
峨螺会啃掉它们柔软的身体，
Whelks bite into their soft bodies.
赭色海星也喜欢吃它们。
Ochre sea stars also love to eat them.
藤壶住在鲸鱼身上，
Barnacles live on whales,
鲸鱼依然自由自在地游泳；
But whales still swim freely.
藤壶住在海龟壳上，
Barnacles live on turtles,
海龟依然会去晒太阳、找食物。
But turtles still sunbathe and search for food.
它们不是凶手，
They are not killers.
不是让动物灭绝的罪魁祸首。
They are not the reason animals go extinct.
真正生气的，是人类——
It is humans who get angry—
当藤壶破坏了船，
When barnacles damage our ships,
我们才把它们叫做“恶魔”。
We call them “devils” only then.
藤壶不是故意伤害谁，
Barnacles never meant to hurt anyone.
它只是想找个地方生活，
They just want a place to live.
安静地做个小小的寄生者。
Quietly, as tiny little hitchhikers.
