"We were hopeful that this vintage would achieve a high score, but we're blind-sided by being awarded best in state." 🏆 Congrats to Mazzaroth Vineyard on taking this year’s Best in Class White Varietal with their 2025 Vidal Blanc, which also earned Double Gold.

Mazzaroth entered three w**es in this year’s competition and took home three medals. Their winning w**e is described as “silky smooth, with notes of pineapple, grapefruit, melon and peach,” and this is their second Double Gold in the last four years.

“You’re never going to be able to make it the same each year,” says Elk Run Vineyards' w**emaker Julian Wilson. “What you have to focus on is just making the best of the w**e that you have, not trying to replicate it, but bringing out the best in the vintage you have that year.”

More than 45 years of Maryland w**e means more than 45 growing seasons, and no two have been exactly alike. It also means plenty of time to learn what works, what doesn’t, and what Maryland can do.

We sat down with Julian and co-founder Neill Bassford to talk about the early days of Maryland w**e, what they’ve learned in the vineyard, and how Elk Run helped shape the industry along the way.
