We had a VERY special guest today! A once in a lifetime chance to meet someone absolutely amazing! There are only 61 living Medal of Honor recipients today, and we had the greatest pleasure of meeting one and offering our humble hospitality to him!

Donald "Doc" Ballard

A little about Doc. As a hospital corpsman in the Vietnam War, he received the Medal of Honor for his heroic actions! On May 16, 1968, Ballard treated two Marines suffering from heat exhaustion, and when returning to his platoon from the casualty evacuation helicopter pad, his rifle company was attacked by a unit of North Vietnamese Army (NVA) soldiers. While under enemy fire, Ballard was attending to a wounded Marine when an enemy gr***de landed near the wounded Marine, four other Marines, and himself. He immediately covered the gr***de with his body to shield the five Marines from the blast. Realizing that the gr***de failed to explode, he quickly threw it out of harm's way as it exploded, saving the Marines and himself from harm or death. He then continued on attending to wounded Marines during the firefight. For his actions, he received the United States of America's highest military decoration for valor, the Medal of Honor.

It was such an amazing pleasure to meet you Doc! You have such an incredible personality and were so very kind to us! We hope if you ever roll threw Evansville again, youll stop by and see us!!

Story time.
My wife and I were watching our oldest at soccer practice when a familiar face strolled by.
I knew this man as I met a lot of customers and they become close and almost family to me and the waitresses.
I introduced him to my wife and he treated my wife and kids like his own. This man was always full of joy and always made everyones day better.
We always seemed to run into each other outside of work and we passed each other shopping at Sam’s club and he made me feel like a million bucks. David Dodson

Last Friday I was running the floor. David and his wife came in to eat lunch. We joked around and smiled like we always do. He told me it was his wife’s birthday. They ended up coming in
later that evening with some of his kids and he brightened up the room as he always did.

Last night I received a phone call from a friend that informed me that David had a heart attack and he was no longer with us. Words cannot express how sorry I am and how much he will be missed. My deepest condolences go out to his wife Janna and his kids.

He is someone that I strive to be as a man, husband, and father. I hope to see his family in the future so I can give them a hug and share a tear. You will be missed and I will think of you when I’m having a down day because I know it will lift my spirits

Every waitress has similar stories and will miss him just as much. Merry Go Round lost a special individual.
