The 2023 Pinot Noir Old Vines comes from vines averaging around 50 years in age in the Maresh and Weber vineyards. The nose is a deep well of bramble berry, plum, amaro, mossy bark and earth. Medium-bodied, it floods the mouth with supple layers of ripe, spicy fruit. It’s balanced by bright, mouthwatering acidity and has a long, flavorful finish. 94 pts Robert Parker

Somm Select says: “Cellar wizard Jim Arterberry Maresh, a third-generation Dundee Hills grower, has raised the bar to a seemingly insurmountable height, producing nuanced, aromatically complex, and wonderfully pure Pinot Noirs that everyone can afford. We’ve offered and sold through them over the years, but today’s special bottling is a first—an affordable “upgrade” if you will. The “Old Vines” displayed on the front label is the sole clue: Maresh’s 2023 comes from two of the oldest and most sought-after vineyard sites in all of Willamette Valley. Unfortunately, this distinguished cuvée has been produced just two other times, as they only wanted 40+-year-old vines fueling this tremendous, if not historic, Pinot Noir. Furthermore, they’re not made in substantial quantities and each release has garnered eye-popping scores that have only quickened the velocity in which they sell out. Sierra Cantabria Crianza 2021
Tempranillo from Rioja, Spain

Sierra Cantabria Crianza is the flagship age-classified Rioja bottling produced by the Eguren family of San Vicente de la Sonsierra. While the family is most well known for their single cru classified bottlings, they produce outstanding ageing classified wines from their estate vineyards in San Vicente. While this category is dominated by blends of purchased fruit sourced from many growers across the entire appellation, the Eguren family are one of the few (if not the only) families in Rioja that produce an estate grown and bottled Crianza from a single village - in this case, San Vicente de la Sonsierra, one of the most respected villages for Tempranillo in Spain.

A village wine sourced from estate sites in San Vicente de la Sonsierra and Labastida, the 2021 Crianza is all Tempranillo grown in an extreme diversity of soils. Freshness and finesse are the markers of the area, and both are well represented here. Medium-bodied power supports generous, velvety layers of ripe raspberry complemented by an undercurrent of chocolate and wood spice. Pretty, there’s a hint of saline and leather that lead to a lengthy finish.

Sterling Vineyards Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon 2022

Winemaker's Notes
The power of Napa shows in the rich, deeply red garnet color with aromas and flavors of dark red and black fruits, including black cherry, raspberry, blackberry and ripe plum. Notes of mocha, oak spice and cassis are accented with sea salt caramel and vanilla bean. Intense and full-bodied, the wine is balanced and well-structured with seamless acidity and evident but pleasing tannins. Approachable and welcoming now, the wine will continue to evolve and reveal more of its personality over the next decade.

Delicious, broad and chocolaty, this almost-sweet wine is plush and indulgent. Rich in blackberries, baked cherries, milk chocolate and spearmint on soft tannins and a full body.

This is nicely rendered, with a mix of gently mulled red and black currant fruit entwined with light sassafras, vanilla and anise notes. Fruit keeps the upper hand through the finish as the other notes meld in.

This is a drink-me-now wine with approachable tannins and a balanced acidity. Find aromas and flavors of roasted coffee, toasted wood, blackberry, black cherry, black currant, black pepper, anise and nutmeg spice.

The Sterling Vineyards Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon is a brooding, dark garnet-red color in the glass with big fruit aromas of blackberry jam, ripe plum and notes of cassis. The nose leads to a full-bodied, concentrated, richly textured palate with flavors of dried black cherry, warm caramel and a pleasing umami character. The wine is dense and offers striking fruit intensity balanced with good acidity and fine, well-integrated tannins. 2024 Filipa Pato "Post Quercus" Baga Bairrada

About Filipa Pato & William Wouters Post-Quercus Baga
During Roman times, wine production in the region of Bairrada (Portugal) was very important and clay amphorae were used to store and transport the wine. The truth is that the name Bairrada (clay) describes the main component of the soils of this area and, therefore, it is normal to find archaeological remains of clay amphorae with which wine was made and transported in ancient times. Inspired by this Roman legacy, Filipa Pato and her husband Willian Wouters have opted for clay amphorae and, consequently, for the micro-oxygenation of wine.
It is from this decision that wines such as Filipa Pato & William Wouters Post-Quercus Baga are born, a single varietal whose name "Post Quercus" (After the Oak Age) refers to a new stage where oak is no longer the protagonist, giving way to clay. Grown from different plots of 80 year old baga vineyards, biodynamic agriculture is carried out and the grapes are harvested by hand at the optimum moment of ripening. In the cellar, the grapes are selected and partially destemmed and then fermented in 500–700 l amphorae with very little extraction and a long maceration on the skins. The wine remains in these amphorae for 6 months. The porosity of the clay creates micro-oxidation, i.e. a technique that allows the wine to breathe and oxygenate naturally. This process helps to soften tannins and improve colour stability.
With the winery's starting point being the production of authentic wines with no frills, Filipa Pato & William Wouters Post-Quercus Baga discovers the possibilities of the native baga variety, a local grape from Bairrada that, following in the footsteps of its ancestors, turns out to be pleasant and pure.

Savory and chalky, with aromas of macerated cherries, raspberries, dried cranberries, dried herbs and red flowers. A gush of tart red fruit at first with chalkiness on the palate, refreshing lift and tension. The tannins sneak in at the end and finish fine and integrated. Medium body. Fermented in amphora.

“Super fresh and bright on the nose, really juicy with this kind of spicy note that goes completely sideways and makes the whole thing feel just very slightly bonkers, but I'm having a lot of fun right now. The more that I smell, the more integrated it feels, and it kind of is coming across like a pie spice that's found its way into this completely amphora aged wine. The palate is really lovely and juicy, the spice finding its way on the lingering and lengthy finish. This is medium bodied, bolstered by some moderate+ tannins that the acidity eventually wins the fight over, but definitely it puts up a little bit of a struggle. This is a really fun an enjoyable wine from a varietal you won't likely see outside of Portugal, at least until it becomes the next huge thing and it's all over Paso Robles or whatever. This is great.”

2020 Kale Wines, Hyde Vineyard, Syrah

Your wine hails from the iconic Hyde Vineyard in the Los Carneros nested appellation, planted by Larry Hyde in 1979. With a cooler climate and vines more than 40 years old, this wine delivers a perfect balance of New World and Old World styles. Reminiscent of a classic Côte Rôtie style, this is a bold, full-bodied Syrah that achieves balance through mineral acids and lower alcohol. A true showstopper young with potential to develop to perfection over decades.

A classy, cool-climate wine from a single vineyard that's better known for chardonnay. It offers deep blackberry, blueberry and black pepper flavors on a rich, supple texture of rounded tannins and a full body. Whiffs of wood smoke, rosemary and sage add tempting complexity. Drink or hold.
Wine Review: This midnight purple colored Syrah from Kale opens with a blueberry and acai bouquet with hints of saddle leather, black cherry, and violets. On the palate, this wine is medium bodied with integrated medium plus acidity. The mouthfeel is balanced, round, very fresh, and mouthwatering. The flavor profile is an acai berry and cedar blend with notes of blueberry and stony minerality. We also detected hints of black licorice, black cherry, and cedar. The finish is dry, and its flavors, acidity, and moderate tingly tannins linger and last for quite some time. We would pair this Syrah with grilled hanger steak or a Sunday pot roast. Enjoy - KWGTP

The wine showcases a deep, inky purple red color. On the nose, there are distinct notes of vanilla, cigar, leather and prune. The tannins offer a velvety smoothness that enriches the luxurious mouthfeel. On the palate, there's a seamless interplay of sweet and savory characteristics. The balanced acidity enhances the overall structure, and the finish leaves a long lasting impression.
About the winemaker
Education: In 2001, Kale Anderson took his first harvest internship at J Winery, Russian River. After graduating BS Viticulture and Enology, he worked at Colgin Cellars for Ann and Joe Wender, Terra Valentine Winery, Cliff Lede Vineyards in Stags Leap District and Pahlmeyer Winery. While Director of Winemaking at Pahlmeyer, Kale became one of the youngest winemakers to earn 100 points from Robert M. Parker, Jr. for the 2013 Pahlmeyer Cabernet Sauvignon Piece de Resistance, the first perfect score awarded to Pahlmeyer in their thirty year history. After fifteen vintages, Kale began consulting in 2016.

2024 Brick & Mortar, Anderson Valley Pinot Noir

Winemaker Notes

Just an hour north from Sonoma County is the Anderson Valley AVA, surrounded by redwood forests, bordered by the Mendocino coastline. A mix of certified sustainable and organic vineyards, Anderson Valley is much colder than other areas in California because the valley runs north-west, opening up to the Pacific Ocean. Our Anderson Valley Pinot Noir is sourced from vineyards in the “Deep End” of Anderson Valley, which is the northern end closest to the ocean. There is prominent marine influence in the region, bringing cool evenings and foggy mornings which create the perfect growing conditions for delicate grapes like Pinot Noir.

Bright and brambly fruits with alpine notes are distinctive in the 2024 Anderson Valley Pinot Noir. Beautifully aromatic and boisterous elements blackberries, violets and redwood forest notes frame the deep and luscious palate. Black raspberry and plum flavors combine with cherry blossom and fresh cedar, highlighted by juniper and bay laurel, which are unique markers for Pinot Noir from this region. The wine is a rich ruby color with purple core, and refreshing brightness.

2020 Copia "The Cure" Central Coast Rhône Blend

Really bright and juicy, delivering a medium- to full-bodied palate where there is a lovely red berry, herb and mineral tinge. Excellent length and poise here. 50% syrah, 30% grenache and 20% mourvedre. Very tasty now, why wait?

It's round and juicy in character, with a stimulating mix of brisk acidity and red plums that add a riveting tension. Nestled at the very top of the impressively steep, vine-clad hills of the Treiso zone of Barbaresco, the winery’s vineyards were planted as early as the 1960’s in the white marl, calcareous soil typical of this area. An impressive selection of cru Barbaresci is punctuated by the spectacular Vigna Boito located at the peak of the Rizzi cru. The estate is managed entirely by the Dellapiana family with son Enrico as winemaker and viticulturist. Rizzi Winery participates in “The Green Experience” project which mandates guidelines for environmentally sustainable production.

The Rizzi 2020 Barbaresco Rizzi shows an etched, focused bouquet that cedes to crushed rose, cassis and dried cherry. It has a guiding note of metal or rust that seems specific to this bottle. The Rizzi cru rises a moderate 230 to 300 meters in elevation with limestone, clay and sand. The wine has a ripe side for sure, owing to the hot vintage, but it also shows a firm and compact quality that Nebbiolo delivers effortlessly. 2024 – 2037

Readers may recall that this vineyards sits on the same hillside as Nervo, but with more chalky in the soils here, so that Enrico will often give this wine a year and a half of aging in botti prior to racking it into cement tanks to finish its élevage. The bouquet is deep, ripe and beautifully red fruity in personality, offering up scents of cherries, blood orange, gamebird, a complex base of chalky soil tones, red curry, a dollop of fresh oregano, rose petals and a smoky topnote. On the palate the wine is vibrant, full-bodied, focused and complex, with a sappy core of red fruit, lovely transparency and grip, ripe tannins and a long, tangy and beautifully balanced finish.
