Join us this Saturday, August 29 for the 35th Obon Festival, held this year at Yujin Gakuen, courtesy of the Japanese American Association of Lane County ( Japanese American Association ). Come visit our mobile Gachapon station, find snacks and handmade Japanese items from the JAA booth, get your misfish from rei mastrogiovanni, learn some new Origami skills with Origami with Tomo and enjoy Obon dancing original Japanese entertainment. Excited for a fun day honoring our ancestors and enjoying all things Japanese!

We are hitting the road!

Come join us at the Roseburg Obon Festival Presented by Roseburg Sister Cities, Inc. Saturday, August 15 from 12pm ~ 8pm at Stewart Park, Roseburg.

If you’ve been to any Asian festivals in town, you’ve seen our friend Tomo, a Tokyo born Oregonian (who shares my love of Kichijoji) wonderful teacher, valued member of the Lane County JAA, and Origami master extraordinaire.

I had the pleasure of meeting Tomo when he taught my son’s high school Japanese class, and then got to be his booth neighbor at Obon these last couple years. Also was neat to find out he helps host a fun Japanese language group (though I have yet to have time to be able to go hang out). If you have a love of Origami and all things Japanese, feel free to give him a follow. Origami with Tomo

I won’t make too many personal posts on this account, but have to make this one. Happy 26th birthday to Alexis ~ my oldest, my sidekick, and the one who deals with all my craziness to make the shop possible. She stayed up all night with me filling gachapon for the Asian celebration instead of getting the sleep she deserves on her birthday, and will be at the booth on and off throughout the day. Trial run for our local art machine this weekend!

Have I finished painting the machine? No. Did I order the correct lightbulb for the machine? Also no, but the creations inside are so amazing we are hoping you don’t notice it’s still a work in process.
