Labor Day weekend is September 5 through 7 this year, and you do not have to plan it.

Friday, get here when you get here. The fire pits are lit, the lights are on over the lawn, and nothing else needs to happen that night.

Saturday, into the park early while the light is good and the lots are still open. Back in the afternoon, cleaned up, sunset seating at Ember.

Sunday, no alarm. Walk the lake path, book the afternoon at Qi Lounge, and let the day stay empty on purpose.

Then stay through Monday. Most of the crowd drives home Sunday night, which makes Monday the best day of the three.

Rooms and cabins for the long weekend are in our bio.

Trail Ridge Road starts about ten minutes from us and climbs to just over 12,000 feet, which makes it the highest continuous paved road in the country. Most people drive it end to end and stop twice. That is the mistake.

Here are four pullouts worth your time, in the order you will hit them heading west out of Estes Park. The last one is a short walk through alpine tundra and it is the one you will remember.

Practical notes: go in the morning, storms build over the tundra most afternoons and there is no shelter above treeline. Dress for twenty to thirty degrees colder than town. Fill up before you go. And check whether you need a timed entry permit for the day you are visiting.

Come back down, sit by the fire pits, and let your ears pop. Link in bio.

The bugling starts before the aspens turn. Late summer into fall, the elk come down out of the high country and take over the meadows, the lakeside, and sometimes the road in front of you.

Three places to hear it, all within about twenty minutes of the resort. Two are in Rocky Mountain National Park and one is close enough to walk.

Worth knowing: dawn and dusk are the hours that matter; the park meadows close to foot travel in the evenings during the rut, so plan to watch from the pullouts, and 75 feet is the minimum distance. They are bigger and faster than they look.

Save this for fall. Rooms for elk season are in our bio.
