We expect to see loggerhead and kemps ridley sea turtles nesting on Manasota Key any day now. Starting on April 15, our volunteers will be on the beaches looking for those early nests.
Although the nesting season legally does not start until May 1, sea turtles cannot read statutes. This is a picture of the first nest from last season on one of our busy nesting zones. It was laid on April 25. Fortunately this turtle stopped before she became entangled in that furniture.
Florida state, county and municipal statutes in our area require that as of May 1, all obstructions must be removed from the beach at night. Now would be a good time to get in the habit.
If you see a sea turtle nesting during daytime, please take pictures and call Coastal Wildlife Club at 941-212-2214.
