We filmed this video a year ago for another account as a contribution, but sadly, it never got posted. I accidentally stumbled upon it today and decided it still deserved to see the light of day. Especially because I’m cooking with one of my favorite humans on this planet, Joanne. 🥰

You guys have gotten to know and love so many of my friendships through social media, but ironically, one of my deepest friendships is probably the least “televised”.

Joanne moved from Chicago to LA years ago, and as much as we would LOVE to make content together every day, life had other plans. But distance has NEVER stopped me from bothering this woman EVERY SINGLE DAY. 🤣

I genuinely don’t know how to do life without her.

Business advice? Joanne.
Cooking advice? Joanne.
Tech, writing, content, negotiating, LIFE advice? JOANNE.

I’m terrified to even imagine a world without her in it. She’s somehow GOOD AT EVERYTHING, but what makes her extraordinary is how selflessly she shares every bit of her brilliance with me.

Honestly, the ONLY positive thing about never meeting Joanne would be that I DEFINITELY WOULD NOT BE RUNNING TODAY!!! 😭🤣

I hate it, but love it at the same time. And for the first time publicly, I’m sharing that I’m training for my first-ever HALF MARATHON because of her.

But here’s where this story gets crazy.

Today, Joanne went running in LA. I went running in Chicago. We didn’t coordinate ANYTHING.

Afterward, we sent each other screenshots of our runs.

We BOTH ran exactly 5 miles today. Didn’t plan it, but it gets wilder.

We BOTH finished in exactly 58 minutes and 15 seconds.

NOT JUST THE SAME MINUTE.
THE EXACT. SAME. SECOND. 😭

I hate running without Joanne. She taught me to run at a pace where I can still comfortably talk, because I’m training to become a long-distance runner, not the fastest runner. And honestly, our conversations are the only thing that gets me through those long distances.
Now I have to learn how to run long distance without her 😩
so sometimes, even when you’re running on opposite sides of the country, the universe finds a way to remind you that you’re still running together. 🥹

Happy Birthday Adamn Killa 🥳♥️

Can’t wait to celebrate you tonight, vegan style! 🥰

Behind that crazy, loud, larger-than-life personality is one of the calmest, most humble and genuinely kind people I know. Just a chill guy who loves his matcha, good vibes, and exploring vegan spots with me. 😍

Brother, I wish you nothing but happiness, love, success, and all the beautiful things this world has to offer. May this be your best year yet! I’m so excited for everything that’s coming your way because you deserve every bit of it.

So proud to call you my friend! Love you! ♥️

Hi, this is the bird from the Art of Play store. 🦜

Due to the amount of misinformation circulating, I feel compelled to speak out.

I was physically present when Kelly Clarkson came in, as I am permanently attached to the wall against my will.

Kelly was nothing but kind and respectful. She wanted to take me home, and frankly, I wanted to go.

Kelly is 100% correct. Everyone else is lying.

Kelly, PLEASE COME BACK. I AM STILL HERE.

Sincerely,
Molly The Bird

I was already married when I came out to my parents. They just didn’t know it. 😔

I had moved from Montenegro to the United States, fallen in love with Julian, and married him. Meanwhile, back home, my parents thought Julian was my roommate.

And I think that’s something people don’t always understand when they say, “Oh, your parents probably knew you were gay all along.”

I don’t think mine really allowed themselves to know.

I think the possibility had crossed their minds many times throughout my life, but because they had grown up believing that being gay was something bad, they would convince themselves that it couldn’t possibly be true about their son.

And I knew that. Which is probably why it took me almost three decades to finally tell them.

But eventually, I wanted my parents to visit me in America. I wanted them to see my home, experience my life here, and meet the person I was sharing that life with. Not as my roommate, but as my husband.

I remember calling them on FaceTime and telling them that I would love to invite them to the United States. I would buy their plane tickets, take care of everything, and make sure they had a wonderful time.

But before they could say yes, there was something they needed to know.

I told them that Julian wasn’t actually my roommate.

And then I said, “He’s not even my boyfriend. He’s my husband. We’re married.”

I have two brothers who are both married to women, and my parents have always been wonderful to their daughters-in-law.

And I told them that all I wanted was for them to give Julian the same chance. To treat him with the same kindness and love they had always shown my brothers’ wives.

I wasn’t asking them to understand everything overnight. I just wanted them to know that this was the person I loved, and that if they wanted to be part of my life, he was part of it too.

My mom started crying.

And then I started crying.

And suddenly I was that little boy from Montenegro again, terrified of disappointing his parents, except now I was a grown man sitting thousands of miles away, telling them that I had a husband.

I don’t even remember everything we said after that. I just remember that we were all crying, and at some point I told them I couldn’t continue the conversation.

I said they should take some time, think about everything, and decide whether they still wanted to come.

And I hung up.

The next day, my mom called me.

We talked about ordinary things. Just a normal conversation between a mother and her son. I don’t think either of us knew exactly how to bring up what had happened the day before, so we didn’t.

And then a few days later, my mom and dad called together.

And they asked me, “So, what dates are you planning to buy our tickets?”

I still get emotional thinking about that question.

Because they didn’t need to give me some beautiful speech about unconditional love. They didn’t need to suddenly understand everything about being gay.

They just needed to show me that they were still coming.

And they were. ♥️

When they finally arrived in America, they got to know Julian.

And oh my God, did they fall in love with him. 😂

Today, my parents absolutely adore my husband. My brothers love him. My whole family loves him.

And sometimes I look at them together and think about how much time I spent worrying that this would never be possible.

And something my mom told me after she returned to Montenegro will stay with me for the rest of my life.

She had been home for a little while, processing everything she had experienced during her visit, when she told me, “I’m so glad I came. I’m so glad I got to see your life, your home, and the person you share it all with. I wouldn’t change any of it for anything in the world. Seeing you that happy made my heart bigger than America.”

I don’t think she will ever fully understand how much those words meant to me. For so many years, I had been afraid that knowing the truth about me would break my mother’s heart. And there she was, telling me that seeing me happy had only made it bigger. 😭

After telling my family, I finally felt comfortable enough to share that part of my life publicly, including on social media.

I thought that was it. I had done the scary part. I had come out. I was free.

But something I’ve learned over the years is that gay people don’t really come out just once.

We come out hundreds of times throughout our lives.

Some of my neighbors still think Julian is my roommate.

An Uber driver will casually ask me if I have a wife and children.

Someone at the post office will make a comment assuming I’m straight.

And every time, even if it’s just for a second, I have to decide whether I want to explain that I’m gay.

Sometimes I do. Sometimes I don’t feel like having that conversation. And sometimes I have to think about whether it’s even safe.

I wish I could tell you that after coming out to my family and sharing my life with millions of people online, I never had to hide who I was again.

But that wouldn’t be true.

This summer, while I was in Montenegro, a man threatened to kill me if I was gay.

And I told him I wasn’t.

It’s difficult to explain how that feels.

To spend so many years finding the courage to be yourself, to build a beautiful life with someone you love, to have your family finally embrace that love, and then one day find yourself standing in front of a stranger, denying the very thing you fought so hard to stop hiding.

But I wanted to be safe. I wanted to go home.

And in that moment, telling the truth didn’t feel worth risking my life.

I think about that sometimes when people talk about coming out as if it’s this one big event that happens and then everything is wonderful forever.

For some of us, it is wonderful. Until suddenly it isn’t.

For some of us, our families become our biggest supporters. For others, coming out means losing the people they love most.

And for many of us, it’s a little bit of everything.

I’m sharing my story today because it’s National Coming Out Day, and because I know there are people reading this who are still having those imaginary conversations with their parents in their heads, wondering how they might react.

I did that for years.

I wish I could tell you that everyone will react like my parents eventually did. I can’t.

But I hope that one day you get to experience the feeling of having the people you love know who you really are, and love you just the same.

And until then, please don’t feel pressured to come out before you’re ready, especially if doing so could put you in danger.

You have nothing to prove to anyone.

I’m so grateful that my parents got on that plane.

I’m grateful they gave Julian a chance to become part of our family.

And I’m grateful that the little boy who grew up thinking he might have to choose between being himself and being loved by his family eventually learned that he could have both.

Happy National Coming Out Day. ♥️🌈

I hope one day we live in a world where nobody has to pretend their husband is their roommate.

Not winning the Nobel Peace Prize and immediately throwing a tantrum and attacking the person who actually won it is a pretty spectacular way to prove the committee made the right decision. Nothing screams “I deserve a peace prize” quite like responding to disappointment with hostility and a full-blown meltdown.

I genuinely don’t understand how anyone who voted for him isn’t absolutely mortified right now. I didn’t vote for him, and I’m STILL getting secondhand embarrassment from having a president who reacts to not getting an award like a toddler who just found out someone else gets to blow out the birthday candles.

Sir, the Nobel Peace Prize is not a participation trophy.
