Two words that sum up fruit growing: LABOR. INTENSIVE.
To answer many inquiries (and accusations 🫢) on our previous reel about asparagus planting, our farm crew are H-2A workers. For anyone unfamiliar with that term, H-2A is a U.S. visa program that allows foreign workers to enter the United States for temporary agricultural work. It is designed for agricultural employers who face a shortage of domestic workers to bring in non-immigrant foreign labor for seasonal or temporary jobs.
But back to peach thinning… when we’re talking getting the highest quality fruit to a point where it can be harvested and sold to the consumer, the amount of care, tending and cultivating that has gone into that single piece of fruit is beyond what most people realize.
And that is totally fine.
But when the costs of farming continue to rise astronomically, yet it’s seemingly impossible to a couple more dollars per case of fresh fruit than we’ve gotten for years and years, it’s easy to understand why especially small specialty farms are struggling and quite frankly, many are going under.
From tightening government regulations to insane inflation rates and massive imports of produce undercutting USA growers, supporting local farms is no longer optional. It has become essential to preserving our country’s food supply. And when you purchase locally instead of something imported at the grocery store, YOU ARE MAKING A DIFFERENCE! 🙌🏻
Despite the long hours and struggles, we’re thankful for everyone that makes this possible in our company - from the top down. Our current third generation owners/operators, “retired” life-long farmers such as Dad here in this video, our farm managers and supervisors, and most definitely our H2 crew.
