Our Story:
We began our adventure in 2010 with a small snack (antojitos) place in Playa Del Carmen, Mexico. Our gorditas and burritos became pretty popular, building a name for ourselves, “madrez!”
The word "madrez!" (mothers) came to be thanks to my mother (Virginia). When we were young she made us corn or flour gorditas (a thicker tortilla with a pocket and stuffed with different ingredients)
which she stuffed with shreds of roasted poblanos and onion, then crisped or toasted them to perfection. She made them BIG, with the hope of filling us up with just one (but we always wanted more). A few years later and after a couple of changes in location, we stumbled upon a small, but perfect place for our next venture. As a result, madrez! café was born, a small and casual place serving quality food, coffee, and natural drinks in Playa del Carmen, Mexico
After more than 10 years, our flourishing café in Playa del Carmen inspired us to open a second location in Flagstaff, Arizona. Now, thanks to continued hard-work, our family run café is growing. We are excited to announce madrez! café is venturing out to the midwest and setting down roots in Elkhorn, Wisconsin. My wife and I moved to Elkhorn at the end of 2021 after we fell in love with the peace and tranquillity we found in the small town of Elkhorn, WI. After settling down for a few years, my passion to open another location of madrez café continued to grow. When my wife and I started our quest to find a location to open madrez café, we had no idea Stillwater Coffee Company was for sale. We had been to Stillwater often and thought it was such a cozy, amazing place and after meeting with the owners Karen and Kevin, we immediately knew just how special it was. The timing was perfect. We are so excited for this opportunity to bring our hometown flare to Elkhorn, WI. We will slowly transition from a full service coffee shop to madrez! café-a breakfast/brunch café serving high quality homemade food and handcrafted drinks. We hope to see you soon!
