Elbert County EMA Offers Safety Tips for Holiday Weekend and Summer Vacations
As Memorial Day weekend approaches and summer activities begin across Georgia, our lakes and rivers will once again be filled with families and visitors enjoying time outdoors. We want everyone to have fun, of course, but we would like to remind you of a few safety precautions that can save lives. The Georgia Department of Natural Resources and the Georgia Department of Public Health continue to emphasize that boating and swimming safety are everyone’s responsibility. Whether you are spending the day on Lake Russell, Clarks Hill, Hartwell, or at a neighborhood pool, preparation and common sense matter.
Important reminders for boaters and swimmers include:
• Every person on a boat should have access to a properly fitting U.S. Coast Guard-approved life jacket.
• Children should wear life jackets whenever they are near or on the water.
• Never operate a boat or personal watercraft under the influence of alcohol or drugs. Georgia law prohibits boating under the influence, and violations can result in arrest, fines, jail time, and loss of boating privileges.
• Georgia law requires operators to maintain safe distances and idle speeds near docks, swimmers, shorelines, marinas, and other boats. Reckless operation puts everyone at risk.
• Avoid excessive speed and wake in crowded areas and near swimmers.
• Do not overload boats beyond the manufacturer’s recommended capacity.
• Always supervise children around water, even if lifeguards are present.
• Learn basic swimming and water rescue safety practices.
• Protect yourself from heat and sun exposure during long days outdoors.
• Designate a sober boat operator before leaving the dock.
The tragic reality is that most water-related accidents and drownings are preventable. Make responsible choices this holiday weekend and over summer vacations.
