The Gullah people are descendants of West Africans who settled along the coasts of South Carolina and Georgia, preserving their traditions, language, and food for generations.

Many of the flavors and cooking traditions that inspire soul food today have roots in Gullah culture.

History Tuesday: The Story Behind Gwada Soul 🌴

Many people know us for the food, but not everyone knows the story behind the name.

Gwada Soul is a fusion of French Caribbean and Gullah cuisines. “Gwada” is short for Guadeloupe, the French Caribbean island where Cathy’s family is from. Chef Jason grew up near Charleston, South Carolina, where Gullah culture has deep roots.

Together, they created Gwada Soul to share the flavors, traditions, and hospitality they grew up with. Many of the dishes we serve today are inspired by family recipes and generations of culture.

Every plate tells a story, and we’re proud to share ours with El Paso.
