Because history is cool!!!

The story of the Royal Oak General Store goes farther back than most people realize…

Listed in Maryland’s Inventory of Historic Properties, the Store was once part of a farm known as “Retreat” purchased by Edward Thomas Benson in 1863. In the 1876 tax assessment, Benson was taxed for a storehouse of dry goods and groceries and for a carpentry shop on this lot. In 1877, the site of the current building was recorded as “E.T. Benson Store and P.O.” That store burned to the ground in 1893.

The current building was constructed around 1910 and was in operation as a store from 1919 through 1950 by William F. Seymour.

Today, the building is preserved as the restaurant we all know and love…T at the General Store.

To celebrate our four new w**es, this Tuesday we’re bringing back a favorite…Wine Night…w**e by the bottle will be half price. From the left, we have an Australian Cabernet, “Bumblebee”, an Oregon Pinot Noir, “Duck Pond”, an Australian Pinot Noir, “Tread Lightly” and an Argentinian Pinot Grigio, “Minimalista”. Hey all…just a reminder…we’re open on Tuesday nights again. This week, we have a delicious butternut soup on the menu and Chef Marc shared that he spent part of the day making pappardelle pasta for those of you that have been requesting.

I am a bit tardy, but have been a little busy…our new menu is now published on opentable. A few additions, a few ole favorites and hopefully something for everyone. Chef prides himself on making everything in house, including the breads, focaccia and crackers. I might be accused of being biased, but I eat out too…I find everything really, really good. The sauces, especially are TDF (2 die for)! Still a few reservations for Saturday night…otherwise we’ll see you next week!

Nothing like Shrimp and Grits…now with Pancetta fans!!! Last night was great fun for all. So happy to be open and see you all again!

Reservations are starting to fill (thank you). I will be there tomorrow night to ensure things run smoothly. You’ll also be able to meet our new staff member, David.

Well, it’s finally time…we will be reopening on Tuesday, September 22 at 5:00 pm (yes, a change to what it used to be). Reservations are currently open on OpenTable. We will also ask for a little grace as we get things up and running at full swing again. You may notice that there are no reservations for Sunday brunch, as we evaluate keeping it or adding additional dinner nights. As always, willing to take input.

We’ve been busy the past couple of days getting ready to re-open, including interviewing some new staff members. We’re looking for another server who mixes the best-est cocktails and a runner / busser (we happily manage schedules for minors who want to work). If you know someone who would be a good addition to our team, let me know directly. We look forward to seeing you all very, very soon…once again bringing warmth and happiness to the General Store!
