Long before Missouri had courthouse squares, southeast Missouri had a town built around a plaza.
Towosahgy, near today's East Prairie, was occupied as a fortified Mississippian community roughly between **A.D. 1000 and 1400**.
This wasn't a temporary camp.
People lived in houses, raised corn, beans, squash and sunflowers, traded for materials from other regions and built major earthworks by hand.
A wooden defensive wall surrounded much of the town. Archaeologists have found evidence for multiple stockades, including projecting bastions spaced along the wall.
Seven earthen mounds were documented around the central plaza.
Six still survive.
The largest is roughly 180 feet wide, 250 feet long and about 16 feet high.
Every basket of earth used to build those mounds was moved without modern machinery.
Missouri history didn't begin with French maps.
Places like Towosahgy had already been organized communities for centuries.
