This 4th of July, we’re celebrating flavor + freedom 🇺🇸

Here are a few African American figures who helped shape what the 4th means in America:

✨ Crispus Attucks
One of the first to give his life for liberty at the Boston Massacre. His courage reminds us that freedom has always taken sacrifice.

✨ Frederick Douglass
In 1852 he gave his famous speech “What to the Slave is the Fourth of July?” — challenging America to live up to “life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness” for everyone.

✨ The U.S. Colored Troops
Black soldiers who fought to preserve the Union proved that Black patriotism was “a necessary engine” in the survival of the Republic.

✨ Black Communities of Memphis & Charleston, 1860s-70s
After emancipation, they reclaimed the 4th with parades, barbecues, and militia companies — making it a celebration of freedom for all.
