IN 1938, DOTHAN THREW A PEANUT FESTIVAL AND DR. GEORGE WASHINGTON CARVER SHOWED UP

Dothan doesn't call itself the Peanut Capital of the World for nothing.

Peanuts became enormously important to southeast Alabama during the early 20th century as farmers searched for alternatives to cotton after the boll weevil devastated the region.

By the 1930s, Dothan was ready to celebrate.
The first National Peanut Festival was held in 1938.

And its guest speaker was one of the most famous agricultural scientists in America.
Dr. George Washington Carver.

Carver had spent decades at Tuskegee Institute researching agricultural methods and promoting alternative crops, including peanuts, sweet potatoes and other plants that could help Southern farmers diversify away from cotton.
His appearance gave Dothan's new festival some serious attention.
There were displays.

Entertainment.
Agricultural exhibits.
And a parade.
Then World War II interrupted the celebration.

The festival disappeared for years before being revived in 1947.
It eventually grew into the huge fall tradition generations of Alabamians know today.

That's what I love about seeing the old photographs.
Modern festival grounds filled with rides and lights can make it easy to forget where this all started.

This wasn't originally about carnival rides.
It was about agriculture.
It was about farmers.

And it was about a crop that helped reshape the economy of southeast Alabama after the boll weevil changed everything.

Nearly 90 years later, Dothan is still celebrating peanuts.
That's a pretty impressive run for something that started as a local agricultural festival in 1938.
