::: TUESDAY, AUGUST 25 :::

The Keefe Jackson-Jakob Heinemann Quartet is a far-flung free jazz ensemble, with members residing in Chicago, Los Angeles and Oslo, Norway. Keefe Jackson (tenor sax) and Adam Shead (percussion) are active members of Chicago’s creative music community and bassist/composer Jakob Heinemann now hails from LA. They recorded an album for Chicago’s Irritable Mystic Records last summer and are joined on this tour by a special guest clarinetist from Oslo.

In support is a new trio of improvisors from Detroit and Ann Arbor. Percussionist, composer and Fire Music Mondays curator Jonathan Barahal Taylor is joined by trumpet phenom Allen Dennard and electronic artist and 1473 label head Chien An-Yuan for an evening of collaborative music-making and sound-shaping.

Advance tickets will go live today via Eventbrite for $10 and will be available at the door for $15. We look forward to another expedition into sound together!

::: SATURDAY AUGUST 22 :::

Portage Garage Sounds recording artist, bassist, producer & student of the synth, Josef Deas (Josef) pulls up at Moondog for a solo excursion into new sonic horizons.

A renowned jazz bassist, Deas was mentored early on by many of Detroit’s most decorated musical artists such as Vincent York, Marcus Belgrave, Vincent Chandler and others. His solo work via Portage Garage Sounds takes a different turn, though, revealing an interest in electronic and experimental musical structure.

He’s joined by longtime friend, experimental rapper, vocalist & writer Edward Nash (Brandon Edward Mitchell), formerly known as MC Kadence. As Kadence, Nash was a founding member of the rap collective The Abolitionists, a project DJ Charles Trees also contributed to as a young beat producer. Nash’s latest releases include collaborations from the likes of Dabrye and Georgia Anne Muldrow.

Artist and DJ Charles Trees (charles trees) threads the night together with selections before, between and after sets. Please join us for an evening of exceptional sound craft and deeply-tied friendship.

The Sleeves is a new UK-based experimental guitar-and-vocal duo featuring renowned songwriter Jack Cooper (Ultimate Painting, Mazes) and guitarist/composer Tara Cunningham (Red Snapper). They made waves at Moondog in January as they toured the States with their full band project Modern Nature. We’re thrilled to welcome them back on the heels of their debut record as The Sleeves.

In support, Detroit singer-songwriter Izzy Johnson joins the bill, bringing their delicately poetic, ambient songcraft to the stage as Izzy Johnson Group.

We’re thrilled to sink into the sound of both of these ensembles, which you can check out now via Bandcamp or your preferred streaming platform.

Advance tickets are up and available now for $16 via Eventbrite (via our Linktree) and will also be available at the door for $20.

Mark your calendars for this rare evening floating in the clouds somewhere above Moondog Café.

On August 1, we welcome Chicago-based experimental electronic trio TV Pow (Tv Pow!) to the stage. Originally formed by improvisers Michael Hartman (Michael Hartman) and Brent Gutzeit in Tokyo in 1995, the duo added artist, producer and audio engineer Todd A. Carter (bel Air Sound Studio bel_Air Carter) upon returning to Chicago in 1996.

For 30+ years, the trio has engaged together with a wide variety of sonic tools including samplers, percussion, invented instruments, synthesizers, turntables, tape manipulation & computers.

We first connected with Hartman in summer 2024 on a tour with Japanese artists Toshimaru Nakamura (no-input mixing board) and Tetuzi Akiyama (electric guitar). If you were there, you remember a rare and wild night in Detroit.

Supporting the touring group is Detroit electronic artist Pablo R. Ruiz (Pablo R. Ruiz). Ruiz returns to Moondog to debut a new project and recordings under the pseudonym Nariz De Perfil. He most recently melted minds at Portage Garage Sounds’ (PGS) Low Tide party in May and we’re looking forward to hear his sound continue to evolve.

Tickets will be available at the door for $15. Please join us for another adventurous sonic exhibition!

Join archivist and cultural curator Egypt Otis (aka The Hood Archivist) Hood Archivist
+ DJ, electronic music artist and Black Music label head Deon Jamar (Deon Jamar)
+ Chicago DJ, producer and Division 81 label head Sonny Daze (DIVISION 81 RECORDS)
+ DJ, archivist, artist & Blue Moon Radio founder Saylem Celeste (saylem mississippi celeste)

for a summer day party celebrating Black dance music history + an interactive trivia experience.

From 2pm-4pm, The Hood Archivist will lead us in a Name That Black History Sample trivia contest—citing Black cinema, spoken word, speeches, and historical recordings that have been sampled across music genres.

Participants will compete for prizes awarded to the first- and second-place winners while exploring the rich intersections of Black history, culture, and sound.

The event will also feature a special pop-up exhibit from The Hood Archivist’s collection of rare books, newspapers, audiovisual recordings, and other primary source materials centered on Radical Black Memory. Attendees are invited to browse, research, and engage with archival materials that illuminate the stories, voices, and movements that continue to shape our collective history.

After 4pm, Deon Jamar, Sonny Daze and Saylem Celeste will take over the decks and guide us sonically and sensorially through music that will move you ‘til the sun is down.

We’ll be requesting $10 for entry but no one will be turned away for lack of funds.

Join us for an afternoon hang on Monday, July 20 in support of our friend Monique aka Moka-42!

We’ll be playing music and shining some light in an effort to raise money and awareness for some challenging mobility issues Monique is facing.

Thanks to Yukiko for planting the seed and bringing the cassette decks and thanks to Terri for being a truly positive force at Moondog and in Detroit music. If you can’t make it, please help us support Monique by smashing that Gofundme link. With love ~~~
