Though I enjoyed my Christmas very much it came with a hefty price. On Christmas Eve our food truck Mestizos Mile High Eats and Mile High Spirits - Denver's Distillery were vandalized by a homeless woman on drugs. Am I upset? Sure, but not at the woman. Im upset that such a thriving city like Denver has such a horrible grip on its homeless situation, im upset that as a community we enable this population by continuously giving them daily handouts without stopping to think about the detrimental effects it has not just on them but also the effects it has on neighborhoods and businesses near by. As a daily witness I can truly say your good gestures are not appreciated, but rather expected by the majority of these people. Through your good will not only do they feed their hunger, but also their drug and alcohol addiction which then prompts them to carry out criminal and violent acts.
I believe in helping out those in need and do so whenever I have the chance since I have been on the receiving end before, however the situation near 5 points, ballpark district, and Lodos has really gotten out of hand and actions must be taken to clean up our streets.
Life is not fair, trust me I know, but that doesn’t mean we cant do something about it. Next time you want to help out those in need reach out to your local mental wellness centers, rehab centers, employment centers, or donate directly to the homeless shelters. If you do decide to give out food or free items make sure to stay back and help clean up the mess left behind.
I understand not all had a Merry Christmas but that does not give anyone the right to destroy whats not yours and steal from those who work hard for a humble living.
Either way we’ll keep a positive attitude and look forward towards 2019
