It breaks our hearts to say goodbye. 💔😔
The Cake Sugar World team and this community have been the most beautiful part of our lives over the last few years.
As a small business, our greatest gain wasn’t just financial—it was the soul, the energy, and the wonderful relationships we built with all of you.✹
We wanted to stay with you much longer, but we were played by a system that doesn’t value honesty.
We have learned how much easier it is for the Department of Finance to close an entity than to help it thrive.
To them, we were just another serial number in their paperwork. But they are wrong—small businesses are more than that. We are a family, and we work harder than any corporation out there.
We dedicated our lives to creating something beautiful that only took the city a day to destroy.
Someone asked me today if we were denied help because of our race or the color of our eyes.
My answer is no—this is happening to small business owners regardless of their background.
This happened because of the deep incompetence and lack of integrity within the city.
They are understaffed, their employees are unwilling to resolve issues, and they care nothing for the future of small entities.
They might have the power, but we have the morals.
We might be "tiny," but we have more heart and values than the organizations that punished us.
We stand strong knowing we did what was right.
Please don’t stop believing in us.
We apologize that our videos are in Spanish, but we wanted to speak from the heart in the most natural language to us while we navigate this heartbreak.
We will miss you all immensely.💔

An important update from Cake Sugar World: We're standing by our Pastry Chef and Owner, Kenlys Otten, as she navigates a difficult situation with the department of Finance in Denver, Colorado. While we can't share more about the case, we want to express our appreciation for Kenlys' dedication, love, and kindness. She's the heart of our bakery, and our community loves her for it. The shop will remain closed for now, but we'll keep you posted on future updates. Thank you for your support during this time.

We will never forget our first steps—baking from our home kitchen during the early days of COVID, and the years we spent growing at Spindle Kitchen before opening our very own shop.You’ve been with us through every single milestone. Headline: My dream shouldn’t be a casualty of city corruption.
Last Monday, I stood before the Denver City Council to share a nightmare. I received a 30-day determination letter regarding my business, Cake Sugar World. But only three days later—while I was open and serving customers—the city issued a warrant and seized my shop.
They claimed I was closing. They were wrong.
I spent 7 days locked out of my own dream. I had to throw away perishables, refund my loyal clients, and watch years of savings and "heart and soul" vanish. I got my keys back, but the trauma remains.
Denver claims to support small businesses, but they are pushing us out to make room for big corporations. We are the backbone of this community, and we deserve laws that protect us, not trap us.

To those who find humor in our struggle: We are not criminals. We are a small business that fought to survive in the worst economy this country and this city have seen in decades.
We are victims of a broken system.Business owners are losing everything every day in this city—we are just the latest ones.
While the United States sits trillions of dollars in debt and Denver faces its own massive deficits, they chose to shut down a local shop rather than accept a reasonable payment plan. Denver is turning into the 'Wild Wild West' where small businesses are left to sink daily. If you think it’s funny to see a neighbor lose their dream and their livelihood, that says more about your character than ours. We are walking away with our peace and our pride.
We did our best, we worked hard, and we aren't ashamed of fighting for our dream until the very end.

To our sweet community at Cake Sugar World,
It is with a broken heart that I address you today. After two years of debating with the City of Denver to get our taxes paid, the city refused to reach an agreement with us. They rejected every payment plan request we made. Instead of helping a small business survive, they sent agents today to lock our doors and take possession of everything we spent years building.
Cake Sugar World was more than a dream come true; it was an opportunity to meet amazing people and share love in every bite. Like every other business, we have struggled to stay open for the last three years. We are currently facing the worst economy Denver and America have seen in years. Between the skyrocketing costs of ingredients, utilities, and labor, there is often no money left over.
We reached out to the city for a manageable payment plan just to keep our doors open. Instead, they played games with us. We were dealing with someone named Wayne, and when he stopped responding, we reached out to his manager, Evette. She simply issued a determination letter with a 30-day notice which we only received last Saturday. I responded to her yesterday, and today she sent "Agent Sam" to lock me out and take everything inside. They demanded the full amount immediately—a move that is ridiculous and awful when they knew we were already asking for help.
It took us years to open this business and the city closed it in a single day. Denver does not care about its citizens or human beings; they only care about judging businesses they have no clue how to operate. To anyone thinking of starting a business here: do not invest your savings or your time in Denver. The way they do business is heartless.
We have decided to let go of what took so much of our money, time, and effort.
Sometimes you win, and sometimes you lose. We lost the business, but we have finally won our peace of mind. We no longer have to worry about the daily struggle.We take pride in knowing we did everything we could, including hiring professionals to help, but the city refused to help us.
