Mezcal Wednesday 🏜️🌵
King of the Countryside — 👑

From famed Candelaria Yegole in southwest Oaxaca, Romulo Sanchez Prada and his “family collective” trek the difficult terrain to harvest the great diversity of wild agave along its’ valleys and canyons. In addition, Romulo and his family have one of the most diverse nurseries in Oaxaca where Espadins grow side by side with Jabali and Tepextate, some of which are allowed to flower to seed and the rest harvested, cooked and rested for up to 12 days prior to fermentation and distillation in copper pots. For many years now Rey Campero (Espadin) is the first pour for someone with limited experience seeking a robust, smoky Oaxacan mezcal; the other expressions providing shining expressions of each varietal and once in a while a beautiful surprise. In recommending a bottle for your shelf at home, Rey Campero will never disappoint may likely become your favorite go to for its value and consistency. When we imagine mezcal: the plant, the terrain, the effort in harvest, the attention to detail imbued with manual labor, the prize of a totality of effort… we think of Rey Campero.

Happy Valentine’s Day and Mezcal Wednesday 🏜️🌵 ½ Priced on select bottles ✨

Mal Bien, started in 2016 with friends traveling the backroads of Mexico and quickly falling in love with the people and the spirits that they produce. The relationships they formed with small batch producers of note are sold with the iconic green painter’s tape used to label samples of batches for tasting while travelling rural Mexico.

In 2020 this love affair blossomed into one of the very first mezcal clubs, the Agave Mixtape series, currently on edition 10. Mixtape features the very best of small batch production from the very best mezcaleros, many of whom periodically make special batches only in small quantities. The importance of the agave clubs and projects like Agave Mixtape play in helping attain the just due notoriety for many of these mezcaleros, and the monetary compensation that supports not only the mezcaleros and their families, but often times the whole community, cannot be overstated.

In addition, Mal Bien’s support of nonprofits and local networks, aims to minimize some of the challenges that bringing these products to market present. The depth of curation and the longevity of their projects helped usher the current state of transparency we enjoy abroad (not to say there are still many unhealthy practices in the industry).

Mal Bien crushes and also look for their friends at Lalocura and Neta, both producers of amazing agave spirits.

Love, worm salt and good times included 💞

Mezcal Wednesday 🏜️🌵
½ Priced on select bottles ✨

Underrepresented due to its narco-violence and governmental corruption, Guerrero has a long and defiant (due to the aforementioned) history with the production of agave spirits. Aguerrido, translating as “valiant,” “fierce,” “veteran,” and “experienced,” is a company founded as a true cooperative between a number of mezcal producing families, many of whom were part of the notorious agave collective founded in 1990 by the name of Sanzekan (no translation).
A triumph really each time we receive a new batch from these amazing master mezcaleros and as we have found with the recent influx of non-Oaxacan mezcal producing states, the varietals you thought you knew, in comparison results in some exciting and unexpected discoveries.

There is a tradition also in this region of “caponing” (cutting the flowering cuixote to concentrate the sugars back in the plant) and aging in glass, both of which arguably change the flavor profile of the finished product.
Raise a copita to the a tradition of defiance for the preservation of culture. Raise a glass to the “aguerrido” in us all.
