For no reason, I woke up thinking about the Guinness Book of World Records; what my friend “Kegman” commonly referred to as “The GBR.” As a kid, it was a fascinating read to be sure. Who didn’t want to know who the tallest person was? Or the guy who ate an entire Cessna airplane? Or - of course - reading about Oliver Peck’s for most tattoos in 24 hours. For no good reason and much like mail-order Moon Rocks, sadly its prominence seems to have wained over the last x amount of years. But back in the day, it was a staple coffee table read. Maybe I’ll head over to and grab some copies. Anyways - what’s this have to do with anything? Nothing … other than the fact that we’ve got the best - and should be GBR winning - . It starts at 4pm and goes until 8pm. Robin and I are at the helm tonight! To quote the great Snakebite Sue, “Come on in, the water… is … fine.”

While I grew up at the tail end of records and tapes, were the way I consumed a majority of music growing up. Being able to drive in my car and listen to, say, on the way to school was absolute freedom. Well, on this day many moons ago, the very 1st CD was released in Japan. The space-aged tech would last a couple of decades on top before Napster - and then iTunes - eventually dismantled the old paradigm. I’m lucky enough to have a cd player in my whip so I roll old-school listening to tunes the classic way. Although, I also have manual crank windows so there’s that. Speaking of that - TONIGHT! A classic in its own right - with Sara Hauder and Claire Bruce from 7-9pm and from 4-8pm. Come play us some tunes that’ll one day be on a new fangled CD!

There are many things I miss from Fair’s past like the Don Carter Bowling-Lane-on-a-trailer and, of course, the Wild West Pet Palooza - it was the best. But the is also high up there. A you could easily walk around with, it lacked the Signature State Fair Boat branding and has since sailed off into State Fair history Sea. Luckily for all of us, a new -Go item has pulled into AllGood Harbor. During Football-Ball Season, get FRITO PIE KITS to go. Available SATURDAY AND SUNDAY ONLY, they include all the fixings you need to a) have the best Frito pie and b) not have to cook a thang. Order online or call it in.

I always assumed a “nice square meal” was referring to what Luby’s called fish. I was wrong. Here at the cafe, you’ll get a real nice square meal and incredible music. Like this week - a first THURSDAY of the month Classic : with Sara Hauder and Claire. It’s a great time to bring your instrument and try out some tunes. FRIDAY, we bring back FTW’s Ryker Hall and his slick brand of emo infused Americana. SATURDAY, an incredibly special treat as Shelby Kemp Music blows your mind with his Mississippi style bluesy-folky-kinda whatchamacallit. It’ll be a damn good time. Hmm. I thought for sure I could squeeze a Mississippi Mud joke in there. Maybe next time I’ll square it off better.

Low 70’s in the morning? It’s really starting to cool off around here. Don’t be caught in a cold snap, we’ve got for sale! “What!?” you say. That’s right. Bonafide, quality hoodies. I reckon you’ll catch me wearing one of these sooner than later just like you’ll catch me tonight at the Todd Deatherage show! Returning to his home turf, Todd brings his signature laser-precision voice to the cafe stage. FYI - He’ll be starting a later than usual - 8:30-10pm. Happy hour still cranks from 4pm-8pm. Now that’s cool.

Forgive my ignorance (like you’ve continued to do on every post), I feel like it’s a rare occasion we see UN-fried okra out in the wild. And by wild, I mean on plates in a restaurant. You might see it pickled, of course, but steamed? Grilled? I did once see a human order “grilled catfish” though so I suspect someone would do it? In the great fried okra vs reg okra battle, one thing is clear : Tonight’s show at the cafe is gonna be amazing. and his trio of Pete Coatney and are incredible and can’t be missed. I’m positive you’ll love the show. If not, your cover charge is free.

Two more days and this could be put on a stick. Most folks have strong opinions about the Fair. Whenever it comes up, you’ll hear phrases that sound something like, “The Fair has the best [this], or “I don’t know brah, it’s too [that].” Some people wish they still had the sideshow element. Most agree that the latest coupon increase from 50 cents to a dollar seemingly without changing any of the pricing at the booths was an oversight (or perhaps wasn’t.). Either which way, I personally like flashing my season pass at the gate and roaming the incredible grounds hosting the largest art deco architecture collection in the US and one of the biggest in the world. The Hall of State alone is worth slack jawing. I guess in summation, the best part of the fair is that it’s too great to miss.

Good things come in threes, and we got three gooderns this week starting with Matt Hillyer and his incredible trio with Pete Coatney and Chad Rueffer. Don’t miss it. It’s a great show 7pm-9pm. Friday Justin Cashion returns to AllGood ! He’s got a couple albums he’ll be releasing that are excellent. 7 or so until 9. And Saturday, Merles singer Todd Deatherage returns to the Cafe for a “late” show 8:30-10pm and promises to play his hit single “Old Fashioned Kind of Love.” This is gonna be a good weekend.

Mac ‘n Cheese. Sometimes a side, sometimes the whole meal. Sometimes with chili on top, and sometimes with some peas or broccoli if on a health-craze. It’s both comfort food and a treat all in one. It’s another one of those dishes that tasted as good when I was a kid as is does now. Poor didn’t live out the same fate.

My first car was a hand-me-down from my Grandmom. It felt like driving a football field. While the one in the picture is pristine, mine was more of the all Rust and duct tape variety. I had a sweet tape deck in it with a green detachable face, because people used to steal radios back then. 6 miles to the gallon and all bounce. I hope she was recycled into something useful. Maybe a cooktop? Or a microphone stand? Hmm…. Sound like a segue? Tonight! Joli Hope Music brings a lil’ Nashvegas to Dallas. Come out early - this is gonna be a good one! Her music’s the kinda music I’d listen to cruising in my old ride; bouncing along the backroads.

High praise to the Deep Ellum Foundation and their well curated and perfectly air conditioned Deep Ellum Community Center exhibit. It’s a super cool trip down memory lane that won’t cost you a dime. (Insert “Better Off Dead” joke). Featuring venue displays and photographs from Jason Janik and Mike Brooks, it’s pretttttty awesome. You should go this afternoon before heading over here to see the one and only - deep ellum legend - around the corner from where it all began at - Matt Hillyer and his trio Pete Coatney and Chad Rueffer (Spot is featured in some posters and clips at the exhibit). When Josh Venable played Nirvana’s on many moons ago, I was at that certain age where I truly felt the shift in the cosmos. It was life altering. I had recently been introduced by my friend Brady Hall to the Pixies so my mind was pre-cracked and pre-disposed for the monumental shake up that Nevermind delivered. And boy howdy what a record. Not everything holds up like it useta, TV Dinners - yuck. But this album - oh yeah. It’s still huge and relevant. To Me at least. I wasn’t one of the lucky ones to say they were at their Trees show. I saw them later at the Fair Park Coliseum with the Breeders and Shonen Knife, and didn’t know how incredibly lucky I was as his time was running short. Anyways - this all has lead to this : I’m gonna eat this Turkey club and listened to Nirvana driving around town today. Tonight, I’ll be back at the cafe slinging a guitar and yapping. Come hang with me 7-9. Happy hour starts at 4 if you wanna pregame.

As a kid, I couldn’t understand my Dad’s apathy as a Cowboy’s fan; how hopelessly he saw each season. But by the ‘92 season, he’d waited some 15 years since they’d won their last Super Bowl. I have now have waited twice as long as him. On this day that pro footballs is returning, let us remember to savor the great times as they arrive, to hoist a glass while the joy is present, and to never forget the wins when they come as that may be the only thing we get to celebrate each year. Oh, and the Cowboys play both the ‘Niner’s and Packers this season, so we’ll get to see “the catch” AND the “catch-no-catch” a lot. Huzzah Cowboys. Maybe this is the year it all comes together. I’m gonna eat my apprehension away with a Breakfast Number 2.
