Trying to find a job with a local business?
Local businesses can be incredible places to grow if you’re reliable, work hard, and have a great attitude (are you seeing a trend here?). If your goal is to work locally, here are a few tips:
• Start with the company website. Check for a careers page or open jobs. A lot of small businesses won’t have one…and that’s okay.
• Look for contact information online. If you find an email address, send a polite message with your resume and references attached.
• If you don’t hear back right away, don’t get discouraged. Small business owners spend very little of their time hiring…they are running their business. Reviewing resumes usually isn’t at the top of the priority list.
• Follow up 5–7 days later with another email or stop by in person at an appropriate time. For example…Sunday lunch at Oskar’s is NOT the time to pop in; however, Thursday from 2 –5 PM…perfect. It’s okay to be persistent, just don’t be annoying.
True story: Megan emailed, called, and stopped by Oskar’s more than five times before we hired her. It wasn’t that we didn’t like her, we simply didn’t have an opening yet. Then suddenly we did. Because she stayed polite, professional, and persistent, we called her first. She’s one of the best hires we’ve made in the last six months. Come say hi to Megan. 😊
✨Local Employers & Job Seekers:
We’d be happy to host a meet-and-greet at Oskar’s for local businesses hiring and people looking for jobs. If that’s something you’d be interested in, comment below and let us know whether you’re an Employer or a Job Seeker. If there’s enough interest, we’ll get something on the calendar.
