There are restaurants you visit for dinner…and then there’s Legs Inn.
🪵🍴 There are restaurants you visit for dinner… and then there’s Legs Inn.
Tucked into Cross Village at the northern end of the famous M-119 Tunnel of Trees, Legs Inn has been serving Polish food in one of Michigan’s most unusual buildings for generations. The story starts with Polish immigrant Stanley Smolak, who settled in Cross Village in 1921 and began creating the remarkable structure that would become the inn.
And yes, those “legs” on the roof are real.
Hundreds of inverted cast-iron stove legs line the roofline, giving the building its unmistakable look — and its name. Inside, you’ll find massive stone fireplaces, hand-carved woodwork, driftwood creations and all sorts of wonderfully strange details that make wandering through the building feel a little like stepping into a folk-art museum.
Then there’s the food.
Legs Inn specializes in Polish cuisine, with favorites including pierogi, kielbasa, cabbage rolls, bigos hunter’s stew and homemade potato pancakes. The menu also features Michigan whitefish and other dishes, so there’s plenty beyond the traditional Polish specialties.
And if you can snag a seat in the garden, you get another reason to linger: the property sits on a bluff overlooking Lake Michigan, making the outdoor dining area especially beautiful around sunset. 🌅
There are even lakeside cottages on the property for those who decide that one meal simply isn’t enough time here.
One practical note for anyone planning a visit: Legs Inn is seasonal. The 2026 season is currently listed as May 22 through October 18, with Tuesdays closed, and the restaurant does not take reservations. There are also current M-119/Tunnel of Trees detours, so check the route before you go.
This is one of those Michigan places where the food is only half the reason to make the drive.
The building is the other half.
