“Daddy’s home, Daddy’s home!”

My sister and I would race to the door every time the Hong Kong apartment doorbell rang. Mom’s heart sank each time because she knew he was across the world, trying his hand in the restaurant business.

The British Hong Kong consulate originally said no to his visa application to come to the United States, but he kept trying. His persistence paid off when he finally got a yes. It would be three years later before he got his green card and came back to Hong Kong to bring us all to America.

“You’ll love it there. The land is beautiful, the sky is blue, and the people are so nice.”

When we arrived in America, the first thing Dad did was make sure we tried American food: burgers, hot dogs, pizza, and sundaes! 🍔🌭🍕🍦

I was nervous about starting school because I couldn’t speak any English, but Dad said, “Don’t be scared, just introduce yourself.” He taught me the few English phrases he knew, and his confidence made me brave too.

We still marvel at how his quick humor and charm never miss a beat and never fail to bring down the house.

Through it all, he insists we remember true hospitality and celebrate each guest.

“Customers drive past 100 restaurants to come to ours. Make sure we treat them right.”

Even in his eighties now, you’ll see him at the restaurant every day, working the room like only he can.

He pushed us to work hard and gave us all the things he didn’t have growing up. But his most important gifts aren’t material. They’re his love of learning, endless curiosity, unwavering optimism, and American pride.

“When my own country didn’t give me a chance, America did, and I will always be grateful.”

We’re all grateful for you, Dad.

Happy Mother’s Day to the Amazing Helen Wong 💐

She moved across the world with her young family to start a new chapter. She left a successful career as a classically trained pianist to support her husband’s dream of an adventure in America.

Mom made her new country home and together they created a small business that has thrived for nearly 50 years. Mom’s constant strength love and wisdom is the gentle power behind our family and our restaurant family.

Today, We celebrate her and all mothers whose love sustains us and everyone lucky enough to be in their orbit.

Love you always Mom!
