Copper River King (Chinook) salmon is highly prized for its velvety texture, rich flavor, and exceptional concentration of healthy Omega-3 fats. Harvested during a strictly limited, early-season run in Alaska, its premium quality and rarity earn it a reputation as the "wagyu beef" or "Rolls Royce" of salmon.
Why It's Special?
Intense Energy Reserves: The Copper River is notoriously swift and spans 300 miles. To survive this grueling journey, the King (the largest of the Copper River species) packs on a massive amount of healthy, Omega-3 rich fat.Melt-In-Your-Mouth Flavor: This high natural fat content yields a delicate, buttery taste that is remarkably mild and far from "fishy".
The Season & Catch -
When: The fishery traditionally opens in mid-May through June, both in the ocean near the river delta and up the river itself. Drift gillnet fishing takes place in the open waters of the Copper River District in the Gulf of Alaska, right near the mouth of the river near Cordova, Alaska.
Rarity: The run is closely regulated for sustainability, and the catch of King salmon is extremely limited, making it highly sought-after by top chefs and fine seafood enthusiasts. The commercial season is strictly managed by the Alaska Department of Fish and Game (ADF&G), with highly anticipated, brief openings (often 12 to 24 hours at a time).
