Congratulations to our bartender, Lindsey Finch, for taking first place in the second round of the Capital City Cocktail Competition this past weekend. 🍸

For her winning cocktail, Lindsey was challenged to create a drink inspired by her assigned country, Japan. Drawing inspiration from the Japanese tradition of Hanami, she crafted a cocktail that celebrates renewal, community, and an appreciation for the impermanence of life’s beauty.

Read below for the full story behind her inspiration.

Congratulations, Lindsey!

“My overall theme for this competition was Community. For Round 1, I used a classic Old Fashioned as my starting point and built my cocktail around flavors you’d find at a Summer BBQ here in South Carolina. For Round 2, my country was Japan. Every Spring, for just a week or two, people will gather under the blooming cherry blossom trees to enjoy food, drink, and each other’s company. This tradition, called Hanami, has been practiced for centuries and celebrates renewal, community, and an appreciation for the impermanence of life’s beauty.

“For my Hanami Sour, I infused Old Forester Rye with toasted sesame and combined that with yuzu, a citrus fruit that’s very significant in Japanese cuisine. I also made a syrup in a three-part process using gum Arabic, xanthan gum, and methylcellulose to mimic the physical effect of egg white in a traditional sour-style cocktail but maintaining a clean scent so as not to alter the delicate aromatics of the yuzu and then finished the drink with a few dashes of my homemade cherry blossom bitters for a floral note.”
