(Our Robin Hood attempt at keeping our souls clean.) In 1996 the term Information Highway popped into my existence. Y2K was coming we' survive it but didn't know it yet. The 90's was coming to an end,and I had an impending sense of doom. The information Highway was coming, WAS HERE. and I didn't know how to turn on a computer. I knew 2 things. Highways are built to pass over pe

ople..quickly, and that I was missing out. Stuck as a coffee shop manager with very little hope for more. Thanks to a program in Delaware sponsored by Joe Biden & in conjunction with Computer Aid Inc. I was selected for a 6-week MSoffice training course that would change my life. At just 19 years old, Jessica Hyatt is making waves in the world of chess. Hailing from Brooklyn, she’s already the highest-rated African American female chess player in U.S. history, earning her National Master title in August 2024, a huge milestone. This title makes her the youngest African American woman to ever achieve such a ranking.

Hyatt’s journey to the top started early, and by the time she was 14, she had already won the New York State Scholastic Championship. What really put her on the map, though, were the victories over Grandmasters Michael Rohde and Abhimanyu Mishra in 2021 and 2022. At just 16 and 17 years old, she became one of the very few African American women to take down grandmasters in tournament play — a feat many seasoned players would be proud of.

But Hyatt isn’t just about trophies. She’s all about representation, mentorship, and giving back. She’s used her platform to mentor young girls of color, inspiring the next generation to see themselves on the chessboard. With over $40,000 in college scholarships earned from her impressive performance, she’s not only breaking barriers on the board but also paving the way for other young women to follow in her footsteps.

Jessica Hyatt’s story is just beginning, but she’s already proving that the future of competitive chess is more inclusive — and it’s brighter because of her.
