Some lunch counters still feel like they’ve been there forever, mostly because the room keeps the same easy rhythm year after year. A good deli can do that.

Stacks of sliced meat, hot sandwiches, soup that comes out steaming, and a counter where people know how to order without making a big production of it. That’s the kind of everyday meal that sticks with you.

Places like this remind me of long talks over coffee, takeout bags on the passenger seat, and diner meals you didn’t realize you’d miss until they were gone. I’m glad there are still spots holding that line.
