Foodhisattva Foodhisattva: Compassionate Cuisine. Vegan, ethical Asian-fusion Cafe located in Cleveland Hts. Ohio

Order online: https://foodhisattvacafe.square.site/

Foodhisattva (pronunciation: food-duh-suht-vuh), a combination of the word "food" and the Buddhist term "bodhisattva", began as a series of vegan pop-up restaurants on the east side of Cleveland in 2014. In 2019, we opened our cafe in our neighborhood, the Cedar-Taylor district of Cleveland Heights Ohio. Our goal is to contribute to the reduction of suffering by creating delicious and affordable cruelty-free food that people, regardless of their dietary preferences, can enjoy. We're excited to be serving our community compassionate cuisine and look forward to feeding our neighbors for many years to come.

It’s Friday, and we have an update.

The Moon Festival starts today, and we have homemade mooncakes for you: flaky pastry filled with anko and a vegan duck egg center made from mung beans.

Our friend Matt H stopped by to take a few pics of the new menu options, so keep your eyes peeled for those shots.

The new menu is off to a slow start. New menu drops and the Moon Festival have usually meant some of our busiest days, but this year is proving to be an exception.

In all honesty, sales have been dropping all summer, and we’re getting worried. Thursday was our slowest day of the year. So was the Thursday before that.

Thank you to everyone who continues to support local. It’s a tough time for all of us, and y’all are keeping the little folks alive. ❤️

Fall Menu

A mix of new and old, we’ve brought back two highly requested fall favorites, the Harvest Bowl and Chana Saag, and I went ahead and created a few new things I’m really proud of: Cultured Corn Ribs and Tan Tan Ramen.

To learn more about the creation of these new dishes, check our website. I talk about it in our weekly newsletter. There is also an interview with me, the chef, owner, and general dog's body behind Foodhi.

Ok, bye

We have a lot going on this week: new menu options, fall favorites, and more.

Fall Into Autumn With These Cozy Sweets

Apple Cinnamon Mousse Cake

Cinnamon sponge and apple mousse, topped with spiced cashew cream and candied apple slices.

Sweet Potato Pie (GF)

Almond crust, warmly spiced sweet potato filling, and toasted meringue.

Friday Only

It’s the start of the Moon Festival, and we’re continuing our tradition with one small caveat: these are available for one day only.

Because everything is falling on the same week, we may not be able to accommodate large orders. Please limit your purchase to 1 or 2 so more people can enjoy them.

Flaky Moon Cake — Flaky pastry filled with sweet red bean and a savory vegan duck egg yolk center.

See next post for menu info!

Trends change. Apparently, the taco craze has officially run its course in Cleveland.

These tacos were once some of our hottest sellers. These days, they move at a pace that makes a snail look ambitious.

And yet, every time I take them off the menu, I hear about it. I get it. I have my favorites, too.

One of the harder parts of running a tiny restaurant is trying to make room for a lot of different kinds of eaters with very limited time, space, and resources. As much as I’d love to keep everything forever, the lowest sellers have to make way for things that actually move.

Some old favorites have found a second life as specials. I’ll occasionally take a loss on something just to satisfy the regulars who keep asking for it (yes, I'm looking at you, Nachos). But with sales down and the cost of basically everything continuing to climb, even that has become harder to justify.

So, for now...

Goodbye, tacos. 🌮

I'll see you on the other side.

Dessert Specials

Is this the best cake in Cleveland? A lot of people tell me it is. I don't like coffee, or alcohol, but you'll keep asking for it so it must be good!

Tiramisu Cake
Vanilla sponge soaked with coffee and rum, layered with mascarpone, coated with vanilla cashew cream, and dusted with cocoa powder.

This is my jam, or rather my CREAM (cash doesn't rule everything around me, but it's fun to sing along). Szechuan pepper has a nice little tingle to it.

Szechuan Orange Cookie Sandwich
Orange Swiss buttercream sandwiched between two Szechuan pepper sugar cookies.

Menu Changes

This week we're bidding farewell to a bunch of our Summer Menu options. This weekend is your last chance to get: Mushroom Scallops Curried Cauliflower Bites Solstice Snap Salad Bangkok Tacos Szechuan String Beans Potato Salad I tried to get ahead of this menu change, but I fell behind again. Who knows what will happen over the next few days? I may make some more changes. That's the exciting thing about running a restaurant entirely by the seat of your pants.

The Mushroom Scallops are a summer classic at Foodhisattva. As the Summer subsides, as do the Scallops.

I like this dish a lot, it plates beautifully and tastes great. It's creative but familiar enough. It takes the middle path.

Get it while you can!

We have another dessert special ready for y’all! 😮

Banana Foster Pudding (GF)

Layers of baked banana foster, whipped coconut cream, and candied pecans.

For the 3D experience:
Move your phone with the photo centered on the screen slowly toward your face. Keep your eyes on the Pudding as it approaches your sensory features. Be careful not to hit yourself with your phone.

For maximum immersion, slowly say “whoa” as the Pudding approaches your face.

We cannot guarantee that this will work. We can guarantee that you will look ridiculous so maybe perform the 3D experience alone.

It’s time to say goodbye to our Szechuan String Beans.

We all love these, but Summer is ending and we have to go back to school. In this analogy, school is the new menu, and Summer represents that simpler time when most of us understood that tech billionaires are more than capable of destroying us all for nothing more than bragging rights.

They’re nuts. Comically evil. Clichés in that 80s movie kind of way.

Anyway, while they’re playing spaceship or bunker, and the rest of us are preparing for the end, we’ve still got a couple weeks to get our string bean fix.

No beans for sad, bitty, bean-brained tech bros.

P.S. I’m back to writing whatever in these. The picture speaks for itself. 😅
